2008 Toyota Tundra Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to reassemble the Power Steering Pump on 2008 Toyota Tundra?
A: Reassembly of the 1GR-FE power steering vane pump requires power steering fluid application on components according to the listed arrows. A new vane pump housing oil seal should be installed using power steering fluid to coat its lip followed by using Special Service Tools 09950-60010 09951-00280 and a press in order to correctly position the seal. Soak the bushing inside the vane pump front housing with power steering fluid before methodical insertion of the vane pump shaft with pulley while taking precautions to protect the oil seal lips by using protective tape on the spline. Power steering fluid needs to coat two new O-rings prior to installing one in the front housing and another on the front side plate. The installation process requires alignment of the front side plate notch to the front housing. The vane pump installation requires the alignment of the notch from the cam ring and the front side plate and proper orientation of the cam ring with the inscribed mark facing upward before installation. The vane pump rotor installation proceeds in either direction as you apply power steering fluid to the 10 vane pump plates before their placement with round ends facing outward to verify correct orientation. You can set up a new vane pump shaft snap ring using a screwdriver along with a snap ring expander tool. The vane pump rear housing needs to receive a new O-ring treated with power steering fluid and installation must be followed by aligning the straight pin of the rear housing to the notches on cam ring and front side plate and front housing before bolting it with 4 bolts torqued to 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft-lbf). The installation procedure requires the flow control valve to receive power steering fluid coating followed by adding the compression spring and flow control valve to the front housing before dressing the pressure port union with power steering fluid and installing a new O-ring along with securing it to the front housing using 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft-lbf). After preparing the suction port union by applying power steering fluid to the O-ring the assembly is installed to the vane pump before securing the bolt at 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf).
