2007 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a Power Steering Pump on 2007 Toyota Tundra?
A: Before starting VANE PUMP (for 1GR-FE) maintenance the first step should be removing the negative battery terminal cable followed by a minimum 90-second waiting period after ignition shutdown to permit navigation system setting retention. Start the service by taking off the under cover, fan and generator V belt from the No. 1 engine and draining the power steering fluid. Start service and repair of the VANE PUMP (for 1GR-FE) by removing the bolt to disconnect both the suction hose and power steering oil pressure switch connector while also removing the pressure feed tube gasket. The vane pump assembly should be removed by unfastening its two bolts. To disassemble the vane pump assembly use Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132) to fix it in a vise before removing the power steering suction port union and O-ring then taking out the flow control valve and compression spring. Start by removing the 4 bolts securing the O-ring to access the rear housing element. After which, separate the vane pump shaft with pulley by unplugging the snap ring. Rephrase the sequence of removal by extracting the vane pump rotor first then the cam ring followed by front side plate and its O-ring. Separate the vane pump housing oil seal from its holder while protecting the front housing from damages. Verify that the vane pump shaft and bush have oil clearance lower than 0.07 mm (0.00276 inch). Measure the thickness of vane pump rotor and plates to confirm readings between 1.405 to 1.411 mm (0.0553 to 0.0556 inch) while verifying the rotor groove clearance does not go beyond 0.03 mm (0.00118 inch). Check the flow control valve assembly for proper functioning along with leakage and measure the compression spring free length to be 29.2 mm (1.15 inch). Checking the pressure port union for leaks while ensuring the pump moves with a normal sound and low torque of 0.3 Nm (3 kgf-cm, 2 inch lbs.). To build the assembly, use the designated power steering fluid to coat the components while installing the new oil seal through Special Service Tools 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) with a press before carefully inserting the vane pump shaft with pulley. Mount the front side plate and cam ring by following the designated orientation before installing the vane pump rotor with plates. Add the snap ring followed by the rear housing equipped with a new O-ring and apply torque to 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Attach the flow control valve assembly and pressure port union and suction port union while torqueing at 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) and 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). The final procedure includes installation of the vane pump assembly followed by connection of the pressure feed tube to the power steering oil pressure switch connector and suction hose then reinstalling the fan and generator V belt, adding power steering fluid to the system and bleaching the system before leak checking and reinstalling the No. 1 engine under cover while reconnecting the negative battery terminal with potential post-reconnection initialization required for certain systems.
