2008 Toyota Tacoma Crankshaft Seal Parts Q&A
Q: How to remove a crankshaft seal on 2008 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Start the crankshaft main bearing seal removal by removing the transmission unit installation irrespective of manual or automatic configuration. When working with manual transmission units you should also take off the clutch cover assembly, clutch disc assembly and flywheel sub-assembly. Special Service Tool 09213-54015 91651-60855 should be used to hold the crankshaft pulley before taking out the flywheel by removing its 10 bolts. When handling the automatic transmission you can start by employing the same Special Service Tool to hold the crankshaft pulley before removing the 10 bolts, drive plate spacer rear, drive plate, ring gear, and drive plate spacer front. Cut the lip of the engine rear oil seal with a cutter knife then extract it from its position using a tape-wrapped screwdriver. Inspection of the crankshaft requires removing the oil seal first, and if damage occurs the surface can be smoothed with 400-grit sandpaper.
