2008 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the timing chain on 2008 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step to extract the timing chain from a 2TR-FE engine involves taking out the hood sub-assembly followed by discharging fuel system pressure along with removing the 4 bolts on each of the No. 1 and No. 2 engine under cover sub-assemblies. Remove the battery tray together with the battery before draining engine oil and coolant. The next step requires removing the radiator support to frame seal LH and fan shroud together with air cleaner cap sub-assembly and air cleaner filter element sub-assembly and air cleaner case using 3 bolts. The vane pump connector must be disconnected before taking out its two bolts to split the pump while keeping the hose intact. Start by removing the No. 2 radiator hose then separate the compressor from its magnetic clutch using a bolt removal followed by disconnection of the connector and removal of four bolts. You should remove the radiator hose inlet then disconnect the fuel hoses before separating the fuel vapor feed hose assembly. The repair process requires removal of the No. 1 air injection hose together with the engine wire along with the exhaust pipe assembly, front exhaust pipe assembly, manual or automatic transmission assembly and engine assembly. The process to remove manual transmission components requires removal of clutch cover assembly, clutch disc assembly and flywheel sub-assembly but automatic transmission requires drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly removal. Starting with the back end plate, remove its 2 bolts followed by removing the intake air connector, generator assembly, V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly, No. 1 idler pulley sub-assembly, and idle pulley assembly with bracket. Afterward, detach crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor and extract the No. 1 intake manifold to head gasket, then cylinder head cover sub-assembly. To inspect camshaft timing gear marks check the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression then turn the crankshaft pulley to position the timing mark "0" notches correctly. Proceed to remove the crankshaft pulley and bolt by first applying Special Service Tools: 09213-54015 91651-60855 and then using Special Service Tools: 09950-50013 09951-05010. Remove the oil level gage sub-assembly and two nuts and 18 bolts before separating the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly. Next, users should carefully cut the applied sealer to extract the oil pan sub-assembly. First remove the oil strainer subassembly with two bolts and two nuts and then proceed to remove the oil pan subassembly by eliminating 16 bolts and two nuts and gently pushing a screwdriver between the oil pan and cylinder block while maintaining care of contact surfaces. The procedure requires removing first the timing chain cover along with the timing chain guide and keeping matchmarks visible before unfastening the 2 bolts, timing chain guide, and O-ring. The No. 1 chain tensioner requires the plunger to be completely pushed into the tensioner before locking it down; then insert a 3.0 mm diameter bar into the stopper plate hole before the bolt, nut, chain tensioner, and gasket can be removed together. Follow these steps to remove the chain tensioner slipper, No. 1 chain vibration damper, chain sub-assembly, crankshaft timing gear or sprocket, No. 2 chain vibration damper, No. 3 chain vibration damper, No. 2 chain tensioner assembly, and the last step is to remove the No. 2 chain sub-assembly by eliminating the bolt and its components which include balanceshaft drive gear shaft and balanceshaft drive gear and crankshaft timing sprocket No. 2 with chain attached.
