2008 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the axle shaft assembly on 2008 Scion xB?
A: The installation sequence for the front drive shaft begins on the LH side where a brass bar with a hammer helps position the drive shaft splines while automatic transaxle fluid is applied to the inboard joint shaft. Before assembly the snap ring should face downwards with its opening side out and there should be no damage to oil seal or dust cover or boot. Place RH drive shaft splines into alignment before connecting it with two bolts and torquing to 64 Nm (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf). Use appropriate rag coating and prevent damage to the oil seal, boot and dust cover during installation. Install the front drive shaft assembly onto the front steering knuckle with axle hub by aligning matchmarks while keeping in mind that pushing the steering knuckle beyond its normal position could damage components such as the speed sensor rotor, insertion part, oil seal, drive shaft boot and speed sensor rotor. The installation process needs completion on the RH side. Install the front lower No. 1 suspension arm sub-assembly for both LH and RH sides as well as the tie rod end sub-assembly for both sides then the front stabilizer link assembly for both sides. Fasten the front speed sensor to its locations on both LH and RH sides before installing the front axle hub nut to its locations for both sides. You should torque the front wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf) then add automatic transaxle fluid for automatic transaxles or manual transaxle oil for manual transaxles while inspecting fluid levels and searching for leaks in both transaxle types before performing front wheel alignment checks and ABS speed sensor signal assessments before installing the rear engine under covers for both LH and RH sides together with the No. 1 engine under cover.
