Scion xB Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the axle shaft assembly on Scion xB?
    A:
The removal process for the front drive shaft assembly begins by draining either automatic transaxle fluid or manual transaxle oil according to the situation. The first step requires removal of the front wheel in addition to the No. 1 engine under cover and both rear engine under covers (LH and RH). The same steps need to be followed to remove front axle hub nuts from both left and right sides. The procedures to separate the LH and RH front speed sensors and the front stabilizer link assemblies must be performed identically on each side. The sequence of operations involves using the same method to separate tie rod end sub-assemblies (LH and RH) and front lower No. 1 suspension arm sub-assemblies (LH and RH) from each other. To disconnect the Steering Knuckle with the axle hub from the front axle assembly mark the drive shaft and axle hub without punching the marks while using a plastic-faced hammer to prevent damage to the oil seal and drive shaft boot or speed sensor rotor. Use Special Service Tool: 09520-01010, 09520-24010, 09520-32040 to remove the front drive shaft assembly (LH) while ensuring protection of the transaxle case oil seal and inboard joint boot and drive shaft dust cover as well as preventing the drive shaft from falling. First remove the two bolts from the front drive shaft assembly (RH) to extract the shaft with its bearing case and finally detach it from the transaxle by being attentive to all seals and the dust cover. The front axle assembly (LH) requires legs from Special Service Tools 09608-16042, 09608-02021, 09608-02041 to stabilize it before using these procedures on the front axle assembly (RH).
  • Q: How to install the axle shaft assembly on Scion xB?
    A:
The procedure starts with LH assembly setup using a brass bar combined with a hammer method to position the drive shaft splines in order before adding automatic transaxle fluid to inboard joint splines and setting the snap ring with downward-facing opening while protecting oil seal components from damage. The RH assembly installation requires proper alignment of splines followed by securing two bolts which should be torqued to 64 Nm (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf). The splines need proper coating and preventive measures against seal and cover damage should be taken. Install the front axle assembly LH by aligning matchmarks while attaching it to the front Steering Knuckle with axle hub but avoid pushing the steering knuckle beyond necessary limits while checking for foreign matter on the Speed Sensor rotor. Perform the installation steps on the right-hand passenger side exactly as done on the left-hand side. Place the front lower No. 1 suspension arm sub-assembly LH and RH, tie rod end sub-assembly LH and RH, and front stabilizer link assembly LH and RH according to the same method used for the RH side installation. Install the front speed sensor LH and RH followed by the front axle hub nut LH and RH and proceed to tighten the front wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf). Fill the automatic transaxle with fluid while inspecting for leaks or add manual transaxle oil in a manual transaxle system followed by leak inspection. The service should end with checks on front wheel alignment and inspection of ABS speed sensor signals followed by installation of the rear engine under covers LH and RH and the No. 1 engine under cover.
