2007 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear axle shaft on 2007 Toyota Tundra?
A: The service operations on the rear axle shaft start by taking off the rear wheel LH along with the rear disc brake cylinder assembly LH and then removing the rear disc LH. A dial indicator should measure rear axle hub bearing looseness at the right angle to a measurement surface. Any looseness exceeding 0.05 mm (0.00197 inch) requires hub axle replacement. The rear axle hub runout measurement should be conducted on the surface outside the hub bolt with a maximum reading of 0.05 mm (0.00197 inch). Replacement of the axle hub might be necessary. The procedure demands reinstalling of rear disc LH followed by clearing and reconnecting the rear disc brake cylinder assembly LH and installing the rear wheel LH. Adjust the parking brake pedal so it has proper movement. To remove the installation disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal while waiting for at least ninety seconds before removing the rear wheel along with draining the fluid from the brakes. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to disconnect the rear brake flexible hose while avoiding damage to the brake tube and remove the attached clip. Pull out the 2 bolts that connect the rear disc brake cylinder assembly LH while precautioning against accidental twisting or bending of the flexible hose. The service technician begins the procedure by removing the rear disc LH followed by removing the parking brake shoe return tension spring LH then the parking brake shoe assemblies LH before moving on to the parking brake shoe lever subassembly LH along with the NO. 3 parking brake cable assembly followed by the rear speed sensor LH. The removal of the rear axle shaft requires 4 nut and parking brake plate removal followed by extraction of both the O-ring and rear axle shaft oil seal using Special Service Tool: 09308-00010. First use a snap ring expander to remove the rear axle shaft snap ring then employ Special Service Tool: 09521-25011, 09521-25021 together with a press to extract the axle shaft before continuing with removal of both rear axle bearing inner retainer and washer. The chisel removes the rear axle bearing inner race surface after grinding it. The procedure to remove the rear axle hub and bearing assembly starts by attaching four temporary nuts onto the housing bolts before striking the bolts with a hammer until they and the assembly detach. For brake drum oil deflector removal use Service Tool: 09650-17011. The rear axle shaft requires an inspection for runout conditions where maximum values of 1.50 mm (0.0591 inch) and 0.05 mm (0.00197 inch) apply for shaft and flange runout respectively; organize replacement in cases of damage or wear. The refitting process begins with new brake drum oil deflector installation, whereas the rear axle hub and bearing assembly fit requires secure installation. Install the rear axle shaft under the guidance of Special Service Tool: 09631-12090, 09726-40010, 09951-01100 while incorporating a new washer and retainer installation. Insert the replacement snap ring through the use of a snap ring expander tool. Use Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00770) to tap in a new rear axle shaft oil seal applying MP grease on its lip. Replace the axle shaft O-ring followed by axle shaft and parking brake plate installation with four nuts tightened to 60 Nm (612 kgf-cm, 44 ft. lbs.). The technician should inspect the LH rear axle shaft and install rear speed sensor LH followed by connecting the NO. 3 parking brake cable assembly. The parking brake shoe lever subassembly LH along with both parking brake shoe assemblies LH and the parking brake shoe return tension spring LH must be installed. The installation of the rear disc LH requires checking the parking brake installation before proceeding with shoe clearance adjustment and disc installation. Mount the rear disc brake cylinder assembly LH with 2 new bolts that require torque application at 95 Nm (969 kgf-cm, 70 ft. lbs.). The process should prevent any flexible hose twisting. The installation of the rear brake flexible hose requires Special Service Tool: 09023-00101, followed by proper torque application. Reconnect the cable to lead negative on the battery then fill the brake fluid reservoir and remove air from the master cylinder and brake line and traction actuator assembly and ABS unit. Check for brake fluid level and inspect for any signs of fluid leakage before installing the rear wheel LH which needs to be torqued to 131 Nm (1336 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs. for aluminum wheels or 209 Nm (2131 kgf-cm, 154 ft. lbs. for steel wheels. Before completion check the differential oil and inspect for leaks and verify parking brake pedal travel with following adjustment when needed and inspect the SRS warning light together with speed sensor signal.
