2007 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the front shock absorber on 2007 Toyota Tundra?
A: The service and repair process for the front shock absorber starts with front wheel removal before detaching the shock absorber with coil spring from the LH side by lowering the lower-side bolt nut and bolt while keeping the bolt in place to prevent assembly drop followed by removing four lower bolts and nuts. The shock absorber assembly needs disassembly through the use of Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) to compress the coil spring until the suspension support becomes free from compression and not reaching dangerous levels before removing the front support to front shock absorber nut and continuing with the suspension support and retainers and cushions from the shock absorber rod and ending with removal of the coil spring from the shock absorber. Multiple compressions and extensions of the shock absorber rod will help you inspect the front shock absorber assembly for abnormal resistance or noise until you determine a replacement is needed. Use the same Special Service Tool to compress the front coil spring until its lower end fits into the spring seat before adding the suspension support with retainers, briefly installing a new support onto the front shock absorber nut, properly positioning it, and removing the Special Service Tool without using an impact wrench. Install the front shock absorber with coil spring onto the chassis frame and lower suspension arm and lower the vehicle and press down multiple times before tightening the shock absorber nut to 195 Nm (1988 kgf-cm, 144 ft. lbs.) and all four upper nuts to 45 Nm (459 kgf-cm, 33 ft. lbs.) with the first nut at its specified torque value. The front wheel installation requires 131 Nm (1336 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.) torque for aluminum wheels whereas steel wheels need 209 Nm (2131 kgf-cm, 154 ft. lbs.). To dispose of the shock absorber properly extend the rod completely then use proper safety equipment to drill a hole in the cylinder because off-road type shock absorbers contain higher gas pressure while the gas itself is nonpoisonous and without color or odor.
