Q: How to disassemble the rear axle shaft on 2008 Toyota Tundra?
A: The first step for removing the rear axle shaft snap ring requires use of a snap ring expander. Special Service Tools 09521-25011 09521-60010 combined with the press will push out the rear axle shaft after which you can detach the rear axle bearing inner retainer and the rear axle shaft washer from the axle hub. A grinder enables grinding of the rear axle bearing inner race surface before extracting it with a chisel. The rear axle hub and bearing assembly needs to receive 4 temporary nuts on housing bolts with the caution to avoid vehicle damage from reused hardware. Apply a hammer to unfasten the 4 housing bolts which also detach the rear axle hub and bearing before removing the nuts. To remove the brake drum oil deflector utilize Special Service Tool: 09650-17011 which removes the 5 hub bolts before you can detach the deflector and deflector gasket from the rear axle shaft.
