2007 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service and repair the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2007 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step for repairing the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring requires following procedures specific to Restraint Systems. The negative battery cable must be disconnected first before waiting for a minimum 90-second period to avoid Air Bag deployment. Remove the front wheel alignment cover and then take out the steering pad with the steering wheel assembly and No.3 and No.2 lower steering wheel covers. The lower steering column cover removal starts with unscrewing two screws preceding the disengagement of two claws before removing the upper steering column cover by first disengaging the claw. The clock spring sub-assembly needs its connectors removed before proceeding with disengagement of 3 claws to extract it. All operations must be carried out without damaging the Air Bag harness. Placing the front wheels straight ahead before you set the turn signal switch to neutral position will enable installation of the clock spring sub-assembly with 4 screws and removal of the lock pin if needed for replacement. The Air Bag connector needs reinstallation before the steering column cover gets secured with its three screws. The clock spring requires centering with a 90-second battery cutoff time to place the cable in the counterclockwise direction when resistance is detected and then rotate the cable clockwise for 2.5 turns to achieve mark alignment. The upper steering column cover requires fitting the claw before adding the lower steering column cover which needs to fit 2 claws and requires 2 screws for securing it. Move forward with installation of the steering wheel assembly together with steering pad followed by No.3 lower steering wheel cover then No.2 lower steering wheel cover. After cable installation complete the connection to the negative terminal with a torque of 3.9 N.m (40 kgf.cm, 35 in.lbf) before checking the horn button assembly and SRS warning light.
