2006 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service and repair the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2006 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step when repairing the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring requires disconnecting the negative battery cable and waiting at least 90 seconds to stop Air Bag deployment. Start by aligning the front wheels to their direct position before you detach the No.2 and No.3 lower steering wheel covers, steering pad and steering wheel assembly. First detach the lower steering column cover after unscrewing the two screws then releasing the two claws while the upper steering column cover requires releasing the claw. Disconnect the Air Bag connector and the connector from the clock spring sub-assembly before removing it while maintaining the Air Bag harness and disengaging all 3 claws. Installation begins with the wheels kept facing forward and turn signal switched to neutral before screwing in the clock spring sub-assembly with four screws while removing the lock pin if a new one is being used. First reinstall the Air Bag connector along with the other connector. Afterward install the steering column cover using 3 screws. Follow these steps to center the clock spring: first disconnect it from the negative battery terminal and then make sure the ignition switch remains OFF before turning the cable counterclockwise until it becomes stiff to move. Continue clockwise rotation about 2.5 times to match the alignment marks. To complete the installation of upper and lower steering column covers use one claw for upper and two claws for lower to fix the components and two screws. Reintroduce the steering wheel assembly and steering pad and install the No.3 and No.2 lower steering wheel covers. You must use 3.9 Newton meters (N.m) of torque (40 kgf.cm and 35 in.lbf) to connect the cable to the negative battery terminal before checking the horn button assembly along with the SRS warning light.
