2005 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the horn button assembly and service the Clock Spring assembly on 2005 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step to replace any horn button assembly while servicing a clock spring assembly starts with following all safety measures for Air Bags before removing the car's negative cable for at least 90 seconds. Remove the steering wheel cover lower No.2 and No.3 using Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) while the front wheels remain pointed straight ahead. Subsequently, detach the horn button assembly with the steering wheel assembly. The lower steering column cover requires two screw removal and two claw disengagement before removal of the upper steering column cover by releasing one claw. Examine both the Air Bag connector and the connector at the clock spring sub-assembly while preserving the Air Bag harness before unscrewing three claws to extract the clock spring sub-assembly. The clock spring sub-assembly needs replacement when it shows any damage such as scratches, cracks, dents or chipping. To install the new clock spring sub-assembly first set the wheels to face straight ahead and turn the turn signal switch to neutral while installing the four screws but keep the lock pin free if applicable. Connect the Air Bag connector by reinstalling the three screws followed by the steering column cover before using the cable centering tool to set the marks while following this procedure: first cut off power at - and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, then turn the cable counterclockwise until you can feel resistance followed by a clockwise turn to align the marks approximately 2.5 turns. The installation process includes placing back the steering column covers in sequence with the steering wheel assembly, horn button assembly, and ending with steering wheel covers lower No.3 and No.2. The horn cable must be reconnected to the negative terminal while applying 3.9 N.m (40 kgf.cm, 35 in.lbf) torque then checking both the horn assembly and SRS warning light status.
