2007 Toyota Prius Oxygen Sensor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oxygen sensor in a hybrid system on 2007 Toyota Prius?
A: The first step to service an oxygen sensor involves taking caution through protection of high voltage hybrid system circuits because improper handling could lead to electric shock or fluid leakage. First remove the radiator support opening cover together with the engine under covers on both left-hand and right-hand sides. After draining the HV coolant extract the rear No. 2 floor board along with the rear deck floor box and finally the rear No. 3 floor board. Remove the negative battery cable first then take a minimum wait time of 90 seconds to stop both Air Bags and seat belt pretensioners from turning on. Proceed with the removal of service plug grip followed by front wiper arm cover, front wiper arms (LH and RH), hood to cowl top seal, cowl top ventilator louvers (LH and RH) and windshield wiper motor and link assembly along with front cowl top panel outer. The service technician must remove the inverter cover before verifying that inverter with converter voltage registers zero and disconnecting the No. 2, No. 1 and No. 6 inverter cooling hoses along with the No. 1 circuit breaker sensor wire and frame wire. First disconnect the wire harness clamp then remove the sensor connector and use Special Service Tool: 09224-00010 to uninstall the sensor before extracting the converter with inverter assembly and air fuel ratio sensor (for Bank 1 Sensor 1). The process of installation requires use of Special Service Tool: 09224-00010 for sensor mounting where torque should be set to 44 N.m (449 kgf.cm, 32 ft. lbf) when using the tool and 40 N.m (408 kgf.cm, 30 ft.lbf) when not using it but still connect the sensor connector along with wire harness clamp. The installation of the inverter cover should begin with the front cowl top panel outer as well as the windshield wiper motor and link assembly, cowl top ventilator louvers (RH and LH), hood to cowl top seal, front wiper arms (LH and RH), and front wiper arm cover. The technician reinstalls rear No. 3 floor board, rear deck floor box, and rear No. 2 floor board after installing the service plug grip and cable into the negative battery terminal followed by HV coolant addition then checks for engine coolant leakage before reinstalling engine under covers (RH and LH) and the radiator support opening cover. Perform initialization steps because some systems must be initialized after connecting and disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal.
