2007 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2007 Toyota Highlander?
A: Service of the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring requires you to follow the Restraint Systems Service Precautions. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery while waiting for 90 seconds to stop Air Bag activation. Begin by having the front wheels facing straight ahead followed by removing the Steering Wheel No.3 Cover Lower, Steering Wheel No.2 Cover Lower, Steering Pad, Steering Wheel Assembly, Steering Column Cover Lower and Steering Column Cover Upper. Pull out the clock spring connectors while maintaining safety for the Air Bag wire harness and unfasten its 3 claws to extract the clock spring. The first installation step includes the Steering Angle Sensor after which the clock spring is added while maintaining straight front wheels at the neutral turn signal position to prevent pin snapping incidents. To change the clock spring start by removing the lock pin before placing the steering wheel assembly while reconnecting the connectors with care for the Air Bag wire harness. Alignment of the clock spring needs the ignition off and battery negative terminal disconnected for at least 90 seconds before installing the Steering Column Cover Upper and Lower. The clock spring needs counterclockwise twisting until it becomes firm then clockwise rotation to around 2.5 marks exactly while avoiding the Air Bag wire harness. After installing the Steering Wheel Assembly the technician should inspect the steering wheel center point and then put on the Steering Pad, Steering Wheel No.2 Cover Lower and Steering Wheel No.3 Cover Lower. Reconnect the cable to the negative terminal while checking the steering pad and executing initialization routines since disconnecting that terminal could be necessary for certain systems. Check the operation of the SRS warning light as the last step.
