2006 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2006 Toyota Highlander?
A: The service of the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring requires thorough reading of the Air Bag Systems service precautions. Use 90 seconds to let the negative battery terminal dry after disconnecting its cable to stop the Air Bags from activating. After positioning the front wheels ahead the service engineer must remove the Steering Wheel No.3 cover lower followed by the Steering Wheel No.2 cover lower and steering pad and steering wheel assembly and steering column cover lower and steering column cover upper. The clock spring removal process starts with disconnecting its connectors while protecting the Air Bag wire harness and disengaging its three claws. Install the steering angle sensor by maintaining the front wheels straight position along with the turn signal switch in neutral mode to prevent pin snap. Connectors to both clock spring and Air Bag wire harness while being careful should be your next step after installing the clock spring and removing its lock pin (depending on replacement needs). Adjust the clock spring only after disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 90 seconds with the ignition switch off. Turn the clock spring against the clockwise direction to achieve firm tension then do two and a half clockwise turns for proper marking alignment while keeping the Air Bag wire harness out of the way. The maintenance process starts with steering wheel assembly installation and continues with center point examination before reinstalling the steering pad and both Steering Wheel No.2 cover lower and Steering Wheel No.3 cover lower. After reattaching the cable to the negative battery terminal complete the steps by checking the steering pad and performing initialization following battery disconnection requirements and inspecting the SRS warning light.
