2005 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2005 Toyota Highlander?
A: Service the restraint systems with included precautions before you can begin to replace the Clock Spring assembly and Clock Spring. To begin the process set front wheels at zero angle before removing steering wheel cover lower No.3 and No.2 together with the horn button assembly followed by the steering wheel assembly utilizing Special Service Tools: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). Proceed to remove the lower steering column cover after you take out its three screws followed by removing the upper steering column cover. Tear the connectors off the Clock Spring sub-assembly with attention to protecting the Air Bag wire harness and then release the three claws to extract the Clock Spring sub-assembly. A new Clock Spring sub-assembly needs replacement when the inspector detects any scratches, cracks or dents on the connector or finds any chips. The front wheels must be parallel to each other while technicians switch off the turn signal by moving it to neutral before inserting the Clock Spring sub-assembly through its 3 attachment points and firmly connecting the connectors that avoid contact with the Air Bag connector. Put the steering column covers in position where you should fasten the lower cover using 3 screws. Perform this work with the ignition switch off along with a terminal disconnection from the battery negative end. Wait at least 90 seconds before continuing. Gently turn the Clock Spring sub-assembly counterclockwise until tight then apply clockwise rotation for 2.5 turns to align the marks although it will align 2.5 turns beyond both directions from the center position. After installing the steering wheel assembly the technician must check the steering wheel center point before moving forward with horn button assembly installation. The final step involves reestablishing the battery negative connection after checking both the horn button assembly and SRS warning light function.
