2004 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2004 Toyota Highlander?
A: Start the replacement of the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring by disconnecting the battery negative terminal while making sure each front wheel points in a direct forward direction. Download and install Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) to remove the horn button assembly along with the steering wheel assembly while discarding the steering wheel cover lower sections No.3 and No.2. The lower steering column cover requires three screw removal followed by removal of the upper steering column cover. Detach connectors from the clock spring sub-assembly while paying attention to protect the Air Bag wire harness and remove the clock spring by disengaging its three claws. Check the clock spring sub-assembly for abrasions as well as clear signs of cracks or dents or chips; replace it immediately if any damage exists. Proceed with step-by-step installation of the new clock spring sub-assembly by attaching the 3 claws followed by connector connection while paying particular attention to the Air Bag connector. Set the turn signal switch to neutral facing position while maintaining straight wheel alignment. Set the upper and lower steering column covers then fasten the lower cover by using the 3 screws. Start the process by confirming the ignition switch is off and remove the battery negative terminal. The procedure requires waiting at least 90 seconds. Following installation of the clock spring sub-assembly turn it counterclockwise gradually until it becomes firm before advancing to a clockwise rotation of 2.5 turns to achieve the proper mark alignment. After the horn button assembly installation proceed to examine the steering wheel center point followed by the steering wheel assembly installation. After reconnecting the battery negative terminal users need to inspect both the SRS warning light and the horn button assembly.
