How to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2005 Toyota Highlander?

The first step to replace an Engine Control Module (ECM) is disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery. The installer should start by taking off the front door scuff plate RH, cowl side trim sub-assy RH, glove compartment door assy and instrument panel finish panel lower No.2. Start by removing the ECM after disconnecting the 2 wire harness clamps then separating the 5 ECM connectors before unthreading the 2 nuts securing the ECM. The next step requires separating ECM bracket No. 1 through the removal of 2 screws and then repeating these steps for ECM bracket No. 2. The first step to install ECM bracket No. 2 involves attaching it with 2 screws followed by ECM bracket No. 1 installation with the same number of screws. Reattach both wire harness clamps to the ECM before connecting its five connectors then fasten the unit with two nuts which require a torque of 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf). The service ends with the installation of lower Instrument panel finish panel No.2 and glove compartment door assembly before installing cowl side trim sub-assy RH and front door scuff plate RH then reestablishing the battery negative terminal.
