2005 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ASSEMBLY (U241E/U140F) on 2005 Toyota Highlander?
A: Engine Under Cover No.1 needs to be removed before PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (U241E/U140F) replacement. The TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY needs separation by removing the control shaft lever nut then disconnecting the cable from its lever points before taking off the clip holding the bracket attachment. The first step is to remove the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY by taking off its nut and washer and control shaft lever and prying out the lock plate and removing the manual valve shaft nut before the two bolts finally pull the switch out. To install the park/neutral position switch first attach it to the manual valve shaft followed by placement of a new lock plate while tightening the nut to 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). First loosely connect the bolts along with the control shaft lever then turn the lever counterclockwise until it stops before rotating it clockwise through two notches until removing it. Place the groove against the neutral basic line and keep the switch in position while tightening the two bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Follow this procedure to tighten the control shaft lever, washer, and nut that requires a screwdriver-staked nut with lock plate. The specified torque setting is 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). The control cable installation on the control shaft lever requires temporary nuts before attaching the control cable and clip to the bracket. The technician should adjust and inspect the shift lever positioning along with testing the park/neutral position switch assembly function.
