Neutral Safety Switch

The U241E automatic transaxle depends on the neutral safety switch as its fundamental safety mechanism which enables vehicle starting only when the transmission is placed in park or neutral. To properly service and repair this switch technicians must examine its operational status while they look for wear signs and damage and verify its correct positioning and electrical connection. Regular maintenance of the neutral safety switch ensures safety for vehicle operations since it blocks unintentional gear starts which improves driving conditions.

The process to uninstall the Neutral Safety Switch from U151E AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE begins with disconnecting the battery cable from the negative terminal and waiting 90 seconds to deactivate Air Bags and seat belts. The service technician should disconnect the positive terminal battery first before proceeding to remove the battery alongside cool air intake duct seal and the air cleaner components starting from No. 2 air cleaner inlet to No. 1 air cleaner inlet, air cleaner cap sub-assembly, air cleaner filter element sub-assembly, air cleaner case sub-assembly and air cleaner bracket. The transmission control cable assembly can be separated by taking off the control shaft lever nut then detaching cables from both control shaft lever and control cable bracket while maintaining the resin guide pipe. To extract the park/neutral position switch assembly start by disconnecting the switch connector before removing the nut followed by washer then control shaft lever. Proceed to use a screwdriver for prying up the lock plate before uninstalling the lock nut and lock plate. Eventually remove the two bolts to extract the park/neutral position switch.

Start Neutral Safety Switch service and repair on the U250E AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE by taking out the battery then removing the ENGINE COVER NO.1 SUB-ASSEMBLY and the AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY. Following the AIR CLEANER HOSE NO.1 removal and INTAKE AIR RESONATOR SUB-ASSEMBLY removal it is necessary to extract the ENGINE UNDER COVER LH. A proper FLOOR SHIFT CABLE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHIFT disconnection process starts with detaching the park/neutral position switch connector followed by removing the nut from the control shaft lever, unclipping the control cable from the control shaft lever, and using the clip to disconnect the cable from the control cable bracket. Use these steps to remove the park/neutral position switch assembly: Unfasten the nut and washer and control shaft lever before lifting the lock plate and removing both lock items and then disassemble the 2 bolts to extract the park/neutral position switch.

The first step to remove the Neutral Safety Switch requires disconnecting the battery connection. The first step should involve removing the air cleaner assembly. The transmission control cable assembly separation requires initial nut removal from the control shaft lever followed by disconnecting the cable from the lever and removing the clip to free the cable from its bracket position while keeping away from the resin guide pipe. First disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector then unfasten the nut followed by the washer and control shaft lever allow a screwdriver to lift the lock plate before you remove the lock plate and the lock nut. The last step is to remove the two bolts followed by pulling the park/neutral position switch out from its position.

Use a screwdriver to pry off the lock plate, then pry out the lock plate again to remove the manual valve shaft nut and lock plate.

Remove the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnect the control cable from the control shaft lever, and remove the clip to disconnect the control cable from the control cable bracket.

Inspect the Park/Neutral Position Switch Assembly and connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.

Remove the nut to disconnect it from the control shaft lever.

Temporarily install the control shaft lever, turn it counterclockwise until it stops, then clockwise 2 notches, and remove the lever.

Install the transmission control cable assembly into the control shaft lever with the nut, torquing it to 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf), and connect the connector to the park/neutral position switch assembly.

Disconnect the switch connector, remove the nut, washer, and control shaft lever, pry up the lock plate to remove the nut and lock plate, and finally remove the 2 bolts to pull out the position switch.

Disconnect the switch connector, remove the nut, washer, and control shaft lever, pry up the lock plate with a screwdriver, and then remove the lock nut and lock plate.

Temporarily install the control shaft lever, turn it counterclockwise until it stops, then clockwise two notches, remove the lever, align the groove, hold the switch, and tighten the bolts to 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf).

Install the No. 2 battery carrier, followed by the battery.

Remove the two bolts and pull out the park/neutral position switch.

Remove the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnect the control cable from the lever, and then remove the clip to disconnect the cable from the bracket.

Install the control shaft lever, washer, and nut, tightening to a torque of 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.), and connect the park/neutral position switch connector.

First, attach the switch to the manual valve shaft and temporarily install the 2 bolts.

Use a screwdriver to pry off the lock plate, then pry out the lock plate again to remove the manual valve shaft nut and lock plate.

Remove the engine under cover LH.

Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly by removing the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnecting the control cable from the lever, and removing the clip from the control cable bracket.

Perform the inspection as previously described.

First, attach the switch to the manual valve shaft and temporarily install the 2 bolts.

Remove the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnect the control cable from the lever, and remove the clip to disconnect the cable from the bracket.

Temporarily install the control shaft lever, turn it counterclockwise until it stops, then clockwise 2 notches before removing it.

First, attach it to the automatic transaxle and temporarily install the 2 bolts.

Remove the nut, washer, and control shaft lever.

Perform the inspection again.

Disconnect the connector from the assembly, remove the nut, washer, and control shaft lever.

Inspect the park/neutral position switch assembly operation, inspect the shift lever position, adjust the shift lever position if necessary, and reinstall the air cleaner assembly, engine under cover No. 1, and battery.

Remove the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly, the No. 2 inlet air cleaner, the air cleaner cap sub-assembly, the air cleaner filter element sub-assembly, and the air cleaner case sub-assembly.

Perform the inspection as previously described.

Apply the parking brake, turn the ignition switch ON, depress the brake pedal, and ensure the engine starts only in the N or P position and that the back-up light and reverse warning buzzer function correctly in the R position.

Loosen the 2 bolts, move the shift lever to the N position, align the groove with the neutral basic line, hold the switch in position, and tighten the bolts to a torque of 5.5 Nm (56 kgf/cm, 49 in. lbs.).

Use a screwdriver to stake the nut with the lock plate.

Remove the battery and battery carrier by taking out the 4 bolts.

Inspect and adjust the shift lever position as necessary, and inspect the Park/Neutral Position Switch Assembly.

Temporarily install the control shaft lever, turn it counterclockwise until it stops, then clockwise two notches, remove the lever, align the groove with the neutral basic line, hold the switch in position, and tighten the bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.).

Reinstall the control shift lever with the nut, torqued to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.).

Disconnect the switch connector, remove the nut, washer, and control shaft lever, pry out the lock plate to remove the manual valve shaft nut, and finally remove the 2 bolts to pull out the park/neutral position switch.

Temporarily install the control cable to the control shaft lever with nuts and attach the control cable and clip to the bracket.

Check the park/neutral position operation to ensure the engine can only be started with the shift lever in the N or P position; if not, perform the adjustment procedure.

Check the park/neutral position switch.

Remove the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnect the control cable from the lever, and remove the clip to disconnect the cable from the bracket.

Attach the control cable to the control shaft lever with the nut at a torque of 13 Nm (133 kg-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) and install the cable with a new clip to the bracket.

Next, remove the battery and the battery carrier.

First, attach the switch to the manual valve shaft and temporarily install the 2 bolts.

Using a screwdriver, stake the nut with the lock plate, then install the control shaft lever, washer, and nut, tightening to a torque of 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.).

Remove the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnect the control cable from the control shaft lever, and remove the clip to disconnect the control cable from the control cable bracket, ensuring not to hold the resin guide pipe.

Temporarily install the control shaft lever, turn it counterclockwise until it stops, then clockwise two notches, remove the lever, align the groove with the neutral basic line, hold the switch in position, and tighten the bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.).

First, remove the battery, engine cover sub-assembly No.1, air cleaner assembly, air cleaner hose No.1, intake air resonator sub-assembly, and engine under cover LH.

First, disconnect the battery.

Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, remove the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnect the control cable from the control shaft lever, and remove the clip to disconnect the control cable from the control cable bracket.

Perform initialization.

Place the park/neutral position switch onto the manual valve shaft and temporarily install the two bolts.
