2007 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear speed sensor on 2007 Toyota Avalon?
A: The servicing work on the rear speed sensor starts with wheel removal and breaking the skid control sensor wire connection through connector detachment. The rear disc brake caliper assembly LH needs removal first followed by taking out the rear disc then uninstalling the rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH by disconnecting its 4 bolts. Place the rear axle hub in a vise between aluminum plates while replacing it if the assembly receives any strong shock or drops. Use a pin punch with a hammer to eject the two pins from Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 while removing the two attachments (09521-00010). Remove the rear speed sensor from the rear axle hub after installing Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040), 09521-00020, 09950-00020 and 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, pitch: 1.5 mm). Do not allow damage to the sensor rotor or scratch the contact surface of the axle hub and speed sensor. Before installation the installer must clean both the hub contact surface and a new skid control sensor to avoid foreign matter attachment at the sensor rotor. Install the skid control sensor onto the axle hub at the correct position through using Special Service Tool: 09830-36010, 09950-60010 (09951-00650), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a press to secure the sensor without directly hammering it. Use a straight and gradual press motion to install the sensor on the detection area which must remain free of foreign debris. Screw and torque the 4 bolts of the rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH to 80 N.m (816 kgf.cm, 59 ft.lbf) before installing the rear disc along with the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH. Put back the skid control sensor wire before seating the rear wheel which needs to be torqued to 103 N.m (1,050 kgf.cm, 76 ft.lbf). The inspection of the rear wheel alignment must end with a check of ABS speed sensor signals both with and without VSC activation.
