2007 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service and repair the front shock absorber with coil spring on 2007 Scion tC?
A: The fixing process for front shock absorbers equipped with coil springs starts with unfastening both front wiper arms, wiper arm head cap, front wheel, hood to cowl top seal and the cowl top ventilator louver LH. The front stabilizer link assembly needs to be disconnected starting with jack support of the front No. 1 suspension lower arm LH then removing its nut. Start service of the front speed sensor LH by removing its bolt before completely removing it from the shock absorber assembly. Detach the front shock absorber with coil spring by first unlocking the lock nut but not removing it. Then begin removing two nuts from the lower side followed by the three nuts from the upper side while lowering the jack to remove the shock absorber. Place the shock absorber inside a vise while using Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) to compress the coil spring with extreme caution against using an impact wrench. Separate the shock absorber components by dismantling the lock nut followed by suspension support LH and dust seal LH while continuing with coil spring seat upper LH and coil spring insulator upper LH then taking the coil spring LH and spring bumper LH and coil spring insulator lower LH. The inspection of front shock absorber assembly LH requires compression and extension testing on the shock absorber rod to detect abnormal resistance or sound then replacement when found necessary. LH coil spring compressing requires the Special Service Tool for reuniting the coil spring insulator lower LH with the spring bumper LH. Start by putting the coil spring into the spring lower seat then add the coil spring insulator upper LH and coil spring seat upper LH followed by the suspension support LH dust seal and suspension support LH. Then apply a new lock nut but only tighten it provisionally. Secure the shock absorber with coil spring by inserting its two bolts into the steering knuckle followed by jack lift and tightening three nuts and two nuts until reaching specified torque specifications. Utilize lock nut while applying MP grease No. 2 to the marked parts before placing the suspension dust cover. The front speed sensor LH as well as stabilizer link assembly LH along with front wheel need reinstallation after torquing to the specified torque values. The last procedure entails reinstalling the front wiper arms with the wiper arm head cap, installing the hood to cowl top seal and cowl top ventilator louver LH while performing front wheel alignment inspection and adjustment. To dispose of the shock absorber require users to extend the piston rod before drilling a hole through the cylinder while using appropriate safety equipment to manage gas discharge.
