2007 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the front lower ball joint on 2007 Scion tC?
A: You must start front lower ball joint servicing by checking the left-hand side front lower ball joint assembly on a raised vehicle while moving the front suspension arm lower No. 1 with a cloth-wrapped wooden block placed between nuts and bolt. The front wheel must be removed first before removing both the front axle hub left nut together with the front speed sensor and tie rod end sub-assembly on the left side. The first step requires separating the lower left portion of the front No. 1 suspension arm sub-assembly before removing the front axle assembly left. The procedure to remove the front lower ball joint assembly left involves first removing the cotter pin and castle nuts before using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to detach the lower ball joint. To inspect the lower ball joint left users must secure it into a vise then attach the stud bolt nut before performing five cycling movements of stud bolt operation. A torque wrench should be used to perform continual nut turns between 3 to 5 seconds per revolution until reaching 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.) torque on the fifth turn. Inspect the dust boots for any faults and replace the lower ball joint if needed. You must install the lower ball joint left to the steering knuckle using the castle nut while clearing out all oil from the thread and taper and torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The process requires new cotter pin installation with a maximum 60 degrees extra nut tightness if the pin holes are not aligned properly. Screw the left front axle assembly to its place followed by the left front suspension No. 1 lower arm sub-assembly and tie rod end sub-assembly and front speed sensor and front axle hub left nut and front wheel with a 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque setting. End the procedure by checking both front wheel alignment and inspecting the ABS speed sensor signal.
