2006 Toyota Solara Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the camshaft and related components on 2006 Toyota Solara?
A: The removal process of the camshaft starts by taking off sequential components including front wheel RH, front fender apron seal RH, engine cover sub-assembly No.1, spark plug, ventilation hoses, and engine wire. The next step requires the disconnection of the engine wire harness clamp before taking off the bolts along with the 2 nuts and extracting the cylinder head cover and gasket. The procedure starts by aligning the crankshaft pulley grooves with timing mark 0 on the timing chain cover while setting No.1 cylinder at TDC to achieve compression. The timing marks from the camshaft timing gear and sprocket must match with the bearing caps before you apply paint marks to the timing chain. First empty the No.1 chain tensioner assembly following the removal of its 2 nuts, tensioner and gasket and prevent crankshaft rotation when the tensioner is not present. Install a wrench to the camshaft while you loosen the bolt and follow the correct sequence to remove the bearing cap bolts before elevating and extracting No.2 camshaft and the sprocket bolt and unconnecting the camshaft timing sprocket from No.2 camshaft. To take out the camshaft properly begin by sequencing the bearing cap bolt removal followed by removing the caps before extracting the camshaft as you secure the timing chain with string to avoid loss inside the timing chain cover. Fix the No.1 camshaft in a vise then tape all paths except the advanced side and apply 150 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2, 21 psi) air pressure through the port on the advanced angle side. This pressure should allow manual rotation of the camshaft timing gear to the advanced side. The fringe bolt on the camshaft timing gear must be removed while all other bolts should stay intact; a straight pin lock release is necessary when reusing the assembly. Install the camshaft timing gear onto the camshaft and turn it gently while keeping its fringe free of the camshaft before tightening the fringe bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm, 551 kgf-cm). Secure the camshaft timing gear with the timing chain after marking alignment then add bearing caps and bolts before tightening them by following the ordered sequence with recommended torques. When installing No.2 camshaft timing components place the painted chain mark against camshaft timing sprocket timing marks before securing the sprocket bolt with light force then installing bearing caps and bolts and tightening the sprocket bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.) while checking for valve lifter safety. Verify the paint marks located on the timing chain match the corresponding positions on the camshaft timing gear and camshaft timing sprocket and the pulley groove. The installation of the No.1 chain tensioner assembly begins by raising the ratchet pawl and pushing in the plunger before hooking the pin after which install a new gasket and the chain tensioner with 2 nuts while tightening them to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). To examine the plunger knock pin operate the crankshaft in counterclockwise motion and rotate the crankshaft clockwise to validate slipper engagement by the plunger. After installing the cylinder head cover sub-assembly by applying new Part No. 08826-00080 seal packing at specified areas next follow these installation steps: finish assembly within 5 minutes while avoiding engine oil for at least 2 hours, bolt and tighten 8 pieces and 2 nuts to 11 Nm (110 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.), reconnect engine wire and replace the front wheel RH and inspect for engine oil leakage.
