2005 Toyota Solara Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2005 Toyota Solara?
A: The camshaft replacement process becomes possible after removing the front wheel RH, front fender apron seal RH, engine cover sub-assembly No.1, spark plug, ventilation hoses, and engine wire. The procedure starts with disconnecting the engine wire harness clamp before removing the bolts, 2 nuts, cylinder head cover and gasket. Set Number 1 cylinder to TDC/compression by turning the crankshaft pulley to view the timing mark 0 of the timing chain cover while aligning its groove and then place paint marks on the timing chain. You should remove the chain tensioner assembly No.1 after you disassemble its 2 nuts and tensioner and gasket while keeping the crankshaft stationary. When removing the No. 2 camshaft, apply a wrench to the camshaft while loosening the bolt before taking out the bearing cap bolts according to sequence and lifting up the combination of the No. 2 camshaft with sprocket bolt to disconnect the camshaft timing sprocket from the timing chain. Before taking out the camshaft, first loosen the specified camshaft bearings then tie the timing chain with a string while ensuring nothing drops into the timing chain cover. The procedure to remove the camshaft timing gear starts by placing the No. 1 camshaft into a vise before taping all paths except the advanced side. A pressure of about 150 kPa (1.5 kgf-cm, 21 psi) should be applied to the advanced angle port to allow turning the gear by hand to the advanced position before removing the fringe bolt. Take out the fringe bolt from the camshaft timing gear but maintain the other four bolts in position while beginning assembly reuse by unlocking the straight pin. When installing the camshaft timing gear assembly apply it to the camshaft and slowly rotate it while your hand gently pushes against the gear's fringe until both show no clearance and then tighten the fringe bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.). To install the camshaft first position the timing chain on the camshaft timing gear with the link's painted mark and then apply the bearing caps and bolts before achieving uniform torque specification. The installation of No. 2 camshaft requires you to align the painted mark of the link with the camshaft timing sprocket timing mark then temporarily tighten the sprocket bolt before installing bearing caps and bolts and finally tightening the sprocket bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.) while watching out for valve lifter damage. Verify that paint marks as well as the pulley groove lie properly positioned against the timing mark on the chain cover. To install Chain Tensioner Assembly number 1, one must first lift the ratchet pawl before pushing in the plunger and hanging the hook from the tensioner pin. Then apply a new gasket followed by the tensioner assembly and torque both nuts to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Before install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly you must use Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent for sealing at two points with 8 bolts and 2 nuts requiring torque of 11 Nm (110 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.). Finish the work by attaching the engine wire while torquing the spark plug to 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.), and reinstall the front wheel RH. Then perform a leak check for engine oil.
