2006 Toyota Sienna Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2006 Toyota Sienna?
A: A micrometer and caliper gauge should be used to measure vane pump shaft and housing front bushing oil clearance which should be within 0.027 to 0.054 mm (0.00106 to 0.00213 inch) ranged with a maximum of 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch); when the clearance surpasses this limit it indicates the vane pump assembly needs replacement. The bushing of the vane pump housing front and w/pulley shaft sub-assembly need replacement when damage or wear becomes evident. A micrometer should be used to measure the thickness of vane pump plates when the measurement falls between 1.397 to 1.403 mm (0.0550 to 0.05524 inch). If the value exceeds 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch) at any time, the vane pump assembly requires replacement. The power steering fluid must coat the flow control valve before testing its ability to fall into the flow control valve hole via gravity power. A new vane pump assembly needs replacement if the valve cannot drop by itself. Checks for leakage require compressed air at 392 to 490 kPa (4 to 5 kg/cm2, 57 to 71 psi) while applying compressed air through the hole opposite the other side hole to ensure the end holes stay sealed; a replacement vane pump assembly is needed if leakage occurs. The flow control valve compression spring measurement with vernier calipers should be a minimum of 32.24 mm (1.2693 inch). In case the measurement is insufficient you must replace the entire vane pump assembly. The pressure port union should be examined for severe seat damage that may produce fluid leaks therefore requiring replacement of the vane pump assembly.
