2006 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear shock absorber with coil spring on 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Service and repair of the rear shock absorber with its coil spring begins by draining suspension fluid through a hose connected to the damping force control actuator bleeder plug while keeping in mind that sudden vehicle height reduction will occur. After fluid pressure declines and oil drains out the bleeder plug requires tightening to 8.3 Nm while removing the hose with a torque of 8.3 Nm (84 kgf-cm, 73 inch lbs.). The rear wheel should be removed first using 131 Nm torque (1,340 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.) before suspending the rear axle housing with a jack to detach the rear shock absorber assembly from the axle housing with 98 Nm torque (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). The installation requires removal of both pressure hose bolts using 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) torque, after which you should extract the O-ring and back up ring to replace them with new ones. Removing the shock absorber requires using a torque of 68 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) to remove the nut while holding the cushion after which you should detach the shock absorber from the retainer and cushion before taking them out. Verify the shock absorber condition by extending then compressing the shock absorber rod; replace the shock absorber in case any irregularities appear during inspection. Install the rear shock absorber bushing through the use of Special Service Tool: 09710-14013 (09710-00061), 09710-28012 (09710-07031), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) with a press to fit the new bushing. The installation process follows backward methods to first fill suspension fluid AHC in the AHC pump & motor reservoir and then complete the bleed procedure before leak inspection. Users must open the shock absorber by drilling a 2 to 3 mm (0.079 to 0.118 inch) diameter hole to release the gas inside while observing chip emissions during drilling. The gas presents no odor, color or toxicity profile.
