2006 Toyota Land Cruiser Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Service or repair the steering knuckle requires removal of the axle hub with disc and subsequent removal of the dust cover by unbolting its four fasteners. Lastly, remove the oil seal and gasket with dust cover. Sever the ABS speed sensor wires by unbolted the sensor using three screws and detaching the harness. The next step involves using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to remove the cotter pin and nut which disconnects the tie rod end followed by using the same tool to remove the cotter pin and nut from the front suspension lower arm assembly. Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 helps remove the steering knuckle by allowing users to detach the steering knuckle from the upper suspension arm after temporarily installing the nut to the lower suspension arm and then removing the nut and steering knuckle from the lower suspension arm. The steering knuckle assembly process starts with removing 2 bolts to detach the arm before using a screwdriver and hammer to tap out the oil seal. The last step includes using a brass bar with a hammer to disassemble bearing and bushing. Press in fresh components of a bearing and bushing using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00540), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) along with a press while applying synthetic oil and lithium soap base chassis grease (NLGI No. 1) inside the bushing. Use Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00910), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a press to install the new oil seal with MP grease applied to its lip. Apply sealant Part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND 1324 equivalent to the threads of the 2 bolts after cleaning them along with the steering knuckle with toluene or trichloroethylene before screwing the steering knuckle arm to the bolts and torquing them to 147 Nm (1,500 kgf-cm, 108 ft. lbs.). When installing the component users need to apply synthetic oil and lithium soap base chassis grease (NLGI No. 1) on the drive shaft followed by placing a jack under the suspension arm to attach the steering knuckle to the arm without damaging the oil seal. First tighten a temporary nut on the lower suspension arm before applying a jack to lift that arm and affix the steering knuckle onto the upper arm using that nut while torquing to 110 Nm (1,125 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.) and installing a new cotter pin. The technician should choose to tighten the nut more until it reaches 600 when the cotter pin holes show misalignment. The nut of the suspension arm should be torqued to 159 Nm (1,625 kgf-cm, 117 ft. lbs.) while installing a fresh cotter pin. The tie rod end should join the steering knuckle through the nut which requires a torque force of 122 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 91 ft. lbs.) and subsequent installation of a new cotter pin while further tightening the nut to 60 degrees if needed. You should attach the ABS speed sensor wire harness along with its 3 bolts and tighten components A to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) yet bolt B requires 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) while component C requires 28 Nm (290 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). Install the dust cover with new gasket and oil seal through their respective 4 bolts while torquing them to 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). Complete the task by reattaching the axle hub with disc.
