  • Q: How to Replace a Crankshaft Seal During Engine Rear Oil Seal Service on 2006 Toyota 4Runner?
    A: The first task to replace an engine rear oil seal requires separate removal of automatic transmission assemblies for 2WD and 4WD systems. Drop the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly after clamping the crankshaft with Special Service Tool 09213-54015 (91651-60855) and 09330-00021. Subsequently uninstall the 8 bolts, front spacer, drive plate and rear spacer. Remove the oil seal through knife-cutting of its lip then insert a screwdriver wrapped in tape to gently remove it from the crankshaft without damaging the part. Journalists should apply MP grease to the lip of the new oil seal before installing it with Special Service Tool: 09223-78010 and a typical hammer while tapping it to achieve a smooth fit against the rear oil seal retainer edge. The assembly process for drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly requires holding the crankshaft using Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855) and 09330-00021 while applying adhesive (Part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND 1324 or equivalent) to 2 or 3 threads of the mounting bolt end. Subsequently install the front spacer, drive plate, and rear spacer on the crankshaft. Use a uniform procedure to tighten all 8 mounting bolts into their specified order while achieving a torque value of 83 Nm (846 kgf-cm, 61 ft. lbs.). The automatic transmission assembly should be reinstalled for both 2WD and 4WD vehicle types.
