2006 Toyota 4Runner Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft (RH) on 2006 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The first step for camshaft (RH) replacement begins by draining engine coolant followed by removing the V-bank cover and disconnecting ventilation hose No.2 before removing the air cleaner assembly. The procedure for intake air surge tank removal includes disconnecting the 2 water by-pass hoses along with a fuel vapor feed hose, ventilation hose and 2 VSV connectors, throttle body w/ motor connector and 3 wire harness clamps and hose clamp. Following this, detach the 2 bolts from the throttle body bracket, bolt and oil baffle plate, 4 bolts and 2 surge tank stays and 2 nuts. The 4 bolt assembly with wrench 8 will remove the intake air surge tank together with the gasket. You should remove all the components of the ignition coil assembly and cylinder head cover sub-assembly through the removal sequence of 10 bolts, 3 seal washers, 2 nuts, cylinder head cover, and gasket. The process should also be applied to the LH cylinder head cover sub-assembly. Use a socket wrench to adjust the crankshaft pulley until the notch overlaps the timing mark "0" on the timing chain cover to position cylinder No.1 at TDC compression because the camshaft timing gear alignment should match bearing cap marks; otherwise switch the crankshaft for 1 complete rotation before marking No.1 chain links that match timing points. Proceed with the removal of tensioner assembly No.1 without crankshaft rotation, apply clockwise stopper plate rotation and insert a 3.5 mm (0.138 inch) diameter rod through the holes. One should take out both of the bolts and the chain tensioner. The process of removing No.2 camshaft requires maintaining level position to prevent damage and requires raising chain tensioner No.2 along with insertion of a diameter 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) pin to fix it while using a wrench to grasp the hexagonal portion before carefully removing the camshaft timing gear set bolt. After separating the timing gear from No.2 camshaft counterclockwise rotation brings No.1 cylinder cam lobes pointing upward; the technician proceeds to remove all 8 bearing cap bolts uniformly followed by removal of the 4 bearing caps and No.2 camshaft. Remove chain tensioner assembly Number Two by first removing its bolt then the complete assembly. When removing the No.1 camshaft maintain its horizontal position with a wrench engaged while loosening the bolt to slide the timing gear and rotating the first cam in the opposite direction until it faces downward. To uninstall the No.1 camshaft proceed with these steps: first loosen and remove all 8 bearing cap bolts and then unscrew the 4 bearing caps simultaneously before disassembling the camshaft timing gear set bolt once you lift the No.1 camshaft and finally separate the No.1 camshaft and its accompanying camshaft timing gear w/ No.2 chain while tying the No.1 chain with a string. When putting the camshaft in place users must keep the camshaft level by aligning the mark link (yellow) with the timing mark (1-dot mark) on the camshaft timing gear. Users should then apply new engine oil to the thrust portions and journals before temporarily fastening the No.1 chain to the No.2 chain and aligning the knock pin hole to the knock pin of the No.1 camshaft. After that users insert the timing gear then temporarily install the camshaft timing gear set bolt. Install the No.1 camshaft onto the RH cylinder head with downward-facing cam lobes then place four bearing caps before applying engine oil on bearing cap bolts threads and under their heads and uniformly tight the bolts. After rotating the No.1 camshaft clockwise users should position the timing mark from the camshaft timing gear and bearing cap then set the paint mark of both No.1 chain and the timing mark before tightening the camshaft timing gear set bolt. Install chain tensioner No.2 by pushing the unit before fixing it with a pin measuring 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Then install both the camera timing gear and tensioner before tightening the bolt. The installation procedure for No.2 camshaft requires placing it on top of the RH cylinder head with upward-facing cam lobes and applying engine oil to bearing cap bolts before uniform tightening of the 8 cap bolts. Use clockwise rotation on the No.2 camshaft to line the knock pin with the timing gear before installing the camshaft timing gear set bolt and taking out the pin from chain tensioner No.2. The chain tensioner assembly No.1 installation requires plunging the plunger to fix the stopper plate before securing the tensioner by screwing in 2 bolts. Put in a fresh gasket along with a timing chain cover plate using four bolts. After that spin the crankshaft pulley two full turns to verify the timing marks. Place cylinder No. 1 at TDC/compression position and follow procedures to install cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH by discarding old packing materials and installing seal packing (Part No. 08826-00080) along with seal washers followed by 10 bolt and 2 nut tightener installation. Begin by installing the ignition coil assembly followed by attaching the intake air surge tank with new gasket material using 4 bolts and 2 nuts then finish by installing surge tank stays alongside the oil baffle plate and throttle body bracket before reattaching all hoses and connectors. The engine coolant needs to be added then ventilation hose No.2 should be connected before installing the cover with 2 V-bank nuts. Inspect ignition timing using SST 09843-18040.
