2007 Toyota 4Runner Camshaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the camshaft on 2007 Toyota 4Runner?
A: To service the camshaft, begin by draining the engine coolant and removing the V-bank cover, followed by disconnecting the No. 2 ventilation hose, air cleaner assembly, and intake air surge tank, which involves disconnecting two water by-pass hoses, the fuel vapor feed hose, the ventilation hose, two VSV connectors, the throttle body with motor connector, separating three wire harness clamps and a hose clamp, and removing two bolts and the throttle body bracket, oil baffle plate, four bolts, and two surge tank stays, along with two nuts. A socket hexagon wrench 8 should remove all four bolts from the system in order to detach the intake air surge tank and gasket. The task consists of disassembling the ignition coil assembly and cylinder head cover sub-assembly by unbolted ten pieces, separated three seal washers, removed two nuts and the cylinder head cover with gasket. Perform the identical sequence for the cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH. To reach TDC compression in the No. 1 cylinder, use the crankshaft pulley to line up the timing mark "0" on the timing chain cover while adjusting the camshaft timing gears to the bearing caps. A single complete crankshaft revolution followed by chain link marking will be needed if the gears are not properly aligned. Follow this procedure to remove the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly while maintaining crankshaft stability and pushing and fixing the tensioner's stopper plate using a 3.5 mm shaft before removing its two bolts and tensioner. During No. 2 camshaft removal maintain its vertical position to prevent damage by using a 1.0 mm pin to fix the No. 2 chain tensioner after you raise it. Then use a wrench to hold the hexagonal portion of the No. 2 camshaft to remove the camshaft timing gear set bolt and timing gear, followed by counter-clockwise camshaft rotation until the No. 1 cylinder cam lobes face upward and gradual removal of the eight bearing cap bolts and four bearing caps with the No. 2 camshaft. You need to take out the No. 2 chain tensioner assembly in three parts starting with the bolt and exiting with both tensioner and camshaft timing gear. The No. 1 camshaft processing requires you to maintain its flat position while using a wrench on the hexagonal area to loosen the timing gear set bolt and shift the timing gear before rotating the camshaft counterclockwise to align its cam lobes underneath and finally rotating the eight bearing cap bolts and four caps before unbolted the timing gear set bolt and removing the camshaft and its timing gear and No. 2 chain secured with a string. The No. 4 camshaft requires leveling before using a wrench to remove the timing gear set bolt from the hexagonal portion. The timing gear should then be separated while each of the eight bearing cap bolts and four bearing caps is uniformly loosened before removal. Follow these steps to remove the chain tensioner assembly by releasing tension, using a wrench to hold the hexagonal portion but first removing the timing gear set bolt then sliding the timing gear parts while removing bearing cap bolts and caps uniformly to separate the timing gear bolt from the No. 3 camshaft which includes the timing gear and No. 2 chain while you tie the No. 1 chain with string then check that nothing drops inside the timing chain cover.
