Toyota 4Runner Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to install the camshaft on Toyota 4Runner?
    A:
Install the camshaft in a level position to avoid damages to the cylinder head while positioning the mark link (yellow) on the camshaft timing gear (1-dot mark). Apply new engine oil on thrust portions and journals and fit the No. 1 chain temporarily on the No. 2 chain of the camshaft timing gear before inserting the No. 1 camshaft into its timing gear slot with the knock pin hole aligned to the No. 1 camshaft knock pin. Install the camshaft timing gear set bolt temporarily before putting the No. 1 camshaft on the RH cylinder head facing downward. Then install the 4 bearing caps in position, apply engine oil to the threads and under heads of the bearing cap bolts and uniformly tighten all 8 bolts reaching 9.0 Nm for 10 mm and 24 Nm for 12 mm head bolts. Utilizing a wrench on the hexagonal part of the No. 1 camshaft, follow by torquing the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 100 Nm while maintaining clockwise rotation for timing mark alignment. The procedure for the No. 2 chain tensioner assembly requires compressing the tensioner before inserting a 1.0 mm pin for fixation and temporarily installing the camshaft timing gear together with the No. 2 chain tensioner followed by tightening the No. 2 chain tensioner bolt to 19 Nm. Position the No. 2 camshaft on top of the RH cylinder head where the cam lobes should face upward and install the 4 bearing caps next before applying engine oil to the bearing cap bolts followed by equal tightening of all 8 bearing cap bolts. Afterward, use a clockwise rotation to align the knock pin and hold the hexagonal portion while installing the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 100 Nm before removing the No. 2 chain tensioner pin. For the No. 3 camshaft, align the mark link (yellow) with the timing mark (2-dot mark), apply new engine oil, temporarily place the No. 1 chain on the No. 2 chain, align the knock pin hole with the No. 3 camshaft's knock pin, set it onto the LH cylinder head with the cam lobes facing downward, install the 4 bearing caps, apply engine oil to the bearing cap bolts, tighten the 8 bearing cap bolts, set the paint mark of the No. 1 chain between the timing marks, and tighten the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 100 Nm. To install the No. 3 chain tensioner assembly first push it into the tensioner before inserting a 1.0 mm pin while temporarily attaching the camshaft timing gear set along with the No. 3 chain tensioner assembly then tightening the No. 3 chain tensioner bolt to 19 Nm. Drop the pin from the No. 3 chain tensioner before releasing chain tension. Afterward install the 4 bearing caps. Apply engine oil to the bearing cap bolts, then tighten the 8 bearing caps bolts to 100 Nm followed by tightening the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 100 Nm. To assemble the No. 1 chain tensioner, push in the plunger then turn the stopper plate clockwise before installing a 3.5 mm bar to lock the stopper plate and finally fastening the chain tensioner to 10 Nm torque with two bolts. Remove the bar then install new gasket combined with timing chain cover plate using four bolts tightened to 9.0 Nm torque while turning the crankshaft pulley two complete revolutions to check the timing marks. The installer must set No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression while checking and adjusting valve clearances and installing the cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH after packing removal, seal packing application, seal washer installation, and proper torque adjustment of all 10 bolts and 2 nuts. The procedure should be repeated for the cylinder head cover sub-assembly followed by installing the Ignition Coil assembly with a torque of 10 Nm and installing the intake air surge tank with new gasket and tightening four bolts to 28 Nm before installation of surge tank nuts and stays and connection of various hoses and connectors. The replacement process ends with air cleaner installation and No. 2 ventilation hose connection and engine coolant addition followed by leak inspection before the installation of the V-bank cover's 2 nuts to 7.5 Nm torque and ignition timing check.
  • Q: How to remove the camshaft on Toyota 4Runner?
    A:
The 1GR-FE engine requires draining coolant before proceeding with the removal of its camshaft while also removing the V-bank cover first. Disconnect the No. 2 ventilation hose followed by the air cleaner assembly removal procedure. Extract the intake air surge tank after disconnecting yanby-pass hoses, fuel vapor feed hose and ventilation hose and the 2 VSV connectors along with the Throttle Body with motor connector. Follow this method to proceed with removal: first separate 3 wire harness clamps and a hose clamp then remove 2 bolts from throttle body bracket followed by removing one bolt from the oil baffle plate after which you must remove 4 bolts from surge tank stays and 2 bolts from this tank. First remove the two nuts so you can utilize the wrench to remove the four bolts, intake air surge tank, and its gasket. Obtain and place the Ignition Coil assembly and cylinder head cover sub-assembly after removing 10 bolts along with 3 seal washers, 2 nuts, and gasket for both components. You should also perform the same procedure on the cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression by aligning the crankshaft pulley notch with the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover while making sure the camshaft timing gears match the bearing caps; if the timing is off turn the crankshaft 360° and repoint then stain the paint marks on No. 1 chain links which touch the timing marks. The chain tensioner assembly of No. 1 must be removed by avoiding crankshaft rotation without the tensioner installed. When the tensioner stopper plate is rotated clockwise you must push its plunger inside. You should achieve cam stopper plate placement with a 3.5 mm bar before you detach both bolts and the chain tensioner. When removing the No. 2 camshaft maintain it at a level position to avoid damage because the 1.0 mm pin should be inserted into the raised No. 2 chain tensioner afterward you should use a wrench to grip the hexagon shape of the No. 2 camshaft before removing its camshaft timing gear set bolt. Start by detaching the camshaft timing gear from the No. 2 camshaft before turning it counterclockwise to position the cam lobes of the No. 1 cylinder facing upward. Proceed to evenly loosen and remove the ordered sequence of 8 bearing cap bolts followed by extracting the 4 bearing caps along with the No. 2 camshaft. To detach the No. 2 chain tensioner assembly begin by removing its bolt followed by removing the tensioner along with its camshaft timing gear. While removing the No. 1 camshaft keep it steady in position because you need to hold the hexagonal portion with a wrench to loosen the camshaft timing gear set bolt while maintaining caution for the cylinder head and valve lifter. Move the camshaft timing gear and cut the No. 1 chain loose from the camshaft timing gear before turning the No. 1 camshaft with a counter-clockwise rotation until its cam lobes orient downward toward the number one cylinder. The 8 bearing cap bolts should be removed in a specific sequence together with the four bearing caps. You should remove the camshaft timing gear set bolt while elevating the No. 1 camshaft and proceed to extract the camshaft timing gear and No. 1 camshaft with the No. 2 chain that requires attachment to a string for protection from falling items inside the timing chain cover.
