- Q: How to install the camshaft on Toyota 4Runner?A: For the 2UZ-FE engine camshaft installation begin with sub gear assembly that includes placing gear spring [1] and sub gear [2] along with wave washer [3] while making sure gear pins fit at gear spring ends subsequently using snap ring pliers to install snap ring. Install the hexagonal camshaft portion into a vise for safekeeping while using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 09962-01000 to position the driven main gear holes with the sub gear holes through service bolt 09963-00500 before tightening the gear teeth. Put in a new oil seal to the camshaft timing tube so its knock pin fits in the drive gear's groove. After temporarily installing the drive gear with 4 bolts apply a uniform torque of 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 in-lbf) using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 09962-01000 with a 5 mm hexagon wrench. After setting the camshaft in a vise use the timing tube knock pin to bring it to the bottom of the groove before installing the bolt with 78 Nm (795 kgf-cm, 58 ft-lbf) torque followed by seal washer then screw plug at 15 Nm (152 kgf-cm, 11 ft-lbf). Assemble the No. 3 and No. 4 camshaft sub-assembly by applying engine oil to thrust areas and timing them correctly before installing the camshafts while using Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black or Three Bond 1207B or equivalent on the camshaft housing plug after cleaning existing packing. First install the new seal washers to bearing cap bolts (A and B) without applying oil beneath their heads. After surface cleaning, apply new seal packing to the front bearing cap then install crankshaft housing plug and oil control valve filter with correct orientation. Use light engine oil on the threads and underheads of bolts D and E.licate the oil feed pipe together with 22 bearing cap bolts through several torque steps that include designated values per bolt. Immediately reinstall the service bolt into the driven sub gear. Lift up the service bolt within the driven sub gear then remove it. Inspect valve clearance by elevating cam lobes and afterwards mount semicircular plugs which need seal packing installation on their grooves. The Camshaft Position Sensor installation needs a bolt and stud bolt torque set to 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 in-lbf) before the camshaft timing pulley sub-assembly LH gets positioned with the knock pin in the timing pulley groove and the 4 bolts tightened to 8.1 Nm (83 kgf-cm, 72 in-lbf) torque. The technician should proceed with installation of the cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH after applying seal packing and installing the gasket before finishing with installing the Ignition Coil assembly with 4 bolts at 7.5 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 66 in-lbf) and connecting the corresponding ignition coil connectors. Continue with the installation of the Timing Belt, No. 1 crankshaft position sensor plate, No. 1 timing belt cover, crankshaft damper sub-assembly, fan bracket sub-assembly, V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly, No. 2 timing belt cover, No. 3 timing belt cover LH, No. 2 timing chain or belt cover, oil cooler pipe, No. 2 idler pulley sub-assembly, compressor, generator assembly, vane pump assembly, fan with fluid coupling, fan and generator V belt, radiator support seal upper, air cleaner hose assembly, throttle body cover sub-assembly, reconnect the negative battery terminal, add engine coolant, and check for leaks.
