2005 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Replace the Crankshaft Seal in a Timing Gear Case or Timing Chain Case on 2005 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The replacement of the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal begins by taking out the V-bank cover followed by removing the radiator support seal upper with a clip removal process. First disconnect the engine under cover sub-assembly No.1 by removing its four bolts. First loosen the fan connected to the fluid coupling then detach both the fan and generator V belt and finally separate the fan with fluid coupling. The correct order to remove the crankshaft pulley uses Special Service Tools 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021, 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05030). The oil seal removal requires a screwdriver whose tip should be taped to prevent damage to the crankshaft. Tapping a new oil seal with MP grease applied to its lip into position requires Special Service Tool: 09226-10010 along with a hammer until it reaches the timing chain cover edge. Use Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855) together with 09330-00021 before installing the crankshaft pulley for subsequent installation of the fan with fluid coupling and fan and generator V belt. Finally tighten everything by hand and replace the upper radiator support seal before verifying engine oil leakages. Close the procedure by attaching the engine under cover sub-assembly No.1 through 4 bolts while torquing at 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.) then secure the V-bank cover through 2 nuts torqued at 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 inch lbs.).
