2006 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Vapor Canister on 2006 Scion tC?
A: The first step for servicing and repairing the Evaporative Emission Control Canister is to disconnect the negative battery cable along with a minimum 90-second waiting period to avoid Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner activation. The service procedure begins with removal of the front floor panel brace and center exhaust pipe assembly and the No.1 fuel tank protector and rear suspension brace lower RH segment. Following this, work on the canister assembly includes disconnecting three elements: leak detection pump connector, fuel emission hose with 2 clamps and fuel tank vent hose. Use your hands to pinch the retainer while pulling out the fuel tank vent connector until all foreign materials are clear. Work without tools to prevent any scratches on the connector. Once finished with the disconnection you should wrap the remaining connection points with plastic material. A clip remover helps remove the non-reassembly needed clip before taking out the two bolts holding the charcoal canister. Install the new filter in the canister filter sub-assembly by threading its bolt at 8.0 N.m (82 kgf.cm, 71 in.lbf) torques and then reconnect both hoses. Begin by fitting the claw of the canister bracket onto the fuel tank hoses temporarily. Use 2 bolts to install the canister at 19 N.m (194 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf) torque then connect the fuel vent hose through pipe alignment followed by upward pressure on the retainer for locking. Confirm that no scratches or foreign matter exists before fitting the fuel tank vent hose while it locks into place. Next install the fuel emission hose along with its two clamps and finally fit in the leak detection pump connector. Install the rear suspension brace lower RH followed by the No. 1 fuel tank protector and then the center exhaust pipe assembly until the front floor panel brace throughout the procedure. Connect the cable to the negative terminal after initialization steps whereas some systems need system reinitialization post-cable removal. Check for exhaust gas leaks at the conclusion of the installation process.
