2006 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the knock sensor on 2006 Scion tC?
A: Before servicing the knock sensor it is essential to follow a specific procedure involving pressure discharging from the fuel system along with draining coolant and waiting at least 90 seconds before removing the negative battery terminal cable. This step is necessary to prevent Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner activation. Service the wiper link by starting with front wiper arm head cap removal followed by front wiper arms (LH and RH) and subsequent removal of hood to cowl top seal, cowl top ventilator louver LH and wiper link with wire harness clamp removal and 7 bolts. For this step remove the cowl body mounting bracket lower LH by separating its bolt and clip and bracket before proceeding with removing the engine cover together with the air cleaner cap and throttle body and fuel delivery pipe and fuel tube. Properly disconnect the fuel tube connector while being careful not to cause damage. Proceed by removing the heater water inlet and outlet hoses and then disconnect the intake manifold while removing the union to check valve hose from the brake booster and the camshaft timing oil control valve connector and wire harness clamp and 5 bolts and 2 nuts. Proceed to remove the intake manifold insulator and the knock sensor by disconnecting the sensor connector followed by unscrewing and removing the nut along with the sensor. Begin the installation with the knock sensor by orienting it correctly before torquing it to 20 N.m (205 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) while connecting the sensor connector. The procedure consists of fitting the intake manifold insulator onto the cylinder block before installing a new gasket into the intake manifold while tightening 5 bolts and 2 nuts to 30 N.m (305 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf). Reconnect the hoses and wire harness according to the specifications. The process requires you to connect the fuel tube first by inserting its connector until it produces a clicking sound before you can proceed to install the fuel delivery pipe followed by attaching the throttle body and air cleaner cap. The cowl body mounting bracket lower LH has a bolt installed with a clip that needs to be torqued to 13 N.m (135 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf). The procedure continues with the cowl top panel outer installation using 7 bolts torqued to 13 N.m (135 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf) and wire harness clamp installation. The procedure ends with attaching the wiper link followed by connecting the battery cable to the negative terminal while adding coolant then inspecting both engine and fuel system leaks before finishing up. After reconnecting the battery, some systems must be initialized while reinstalling the engine cover along with the cowl top ventilator louver LH plus hood to cowl top seal and both front wiper arms before taking off the front wiper arm head cap.
