  • Q: How do you replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2005 Toyota Solara?
    A: The first step to replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring requires removing the battery negative terminal while aligning the front wheels forward. Start the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring replacement by first removing the steering wheel cover lower No.2 and No.3 then the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly using Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). Take out the two screws from the steering column cover lower to remove it together with the cover. Disconnect the clock spring sub-assembly connectors with safety precautions for the Air Bag wire harness before unscrewing the four assembly retention screws and extracting the clock spring sub-assembly. New clock spring sub-assembly needs to be installed when the inspection shows damage in the form of scratches, cracks, dents or chips. Install the new clock spring sub-assembly by using 4 screws while the front wheels remain straight ahead and using neutral on the turn signal switch and removing lock pins when required. Connectors to the clock spring sub-assembly should be reinstalled with special attention given to avoid damaging the Air Bag wire harness. Fasten the steering column cover onto its mount together with the steering column cover lower through two screws. Before starting your work check that both the ignition switch is off and that you have disconnected the battery negative terminal. Wait at least 90 seconds before you continue. To align the marks correctly rotate the clock spring sub-assembly counterclockwise until there is firm resistance then turn it clockwise exactly 2.5 times. To finish the task install the steering wheel assembly and confirm the steering wheel center point before putting on the horn button assembly and attaching the battery negative terminal to activate essential systems. Final inspections must cover the horn button assembly together with the SRS warning light.
