2005 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain on 2005 Toyota Matrix?
A: This operation starts with disconnecting the battery negative terminal followed by front wheel RH removal before extracting the engine under cover RH and cylinder head cover No. 2 through unfastening both nuts and clips. The procedure starts by draining engine coolant followed by removing the fan V belt and generator assembly which leads to separating the vane pump assembly before removing the generator assembly. The procedure begins by uninstalling the engine mounting insulator right side through the removal of two bolts together with oil reservoir bracket No.1. A jack-supported wooden block is required to stabilize the engine before proceeding with 4 bolt and 2 nut removal. Metal connectors for the ignition coils must be disconnected while 2 nuts are unscrewed to break the engine wire connection then remove all 4 ignition coils. The procedure requires users to detach the ventilation hoses from the cylinder head cover and afterward remove 9 bolts and 2 seal washers and 2 nuts and 3 clamp brackets to separate the cover. The first step includes removing the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly bolts as well as the nut while jacking the engine up and down to finish removing its bolt. Complete the process by taking away the engine mounting bracket RH using 3 bolts. The removal process starts by unthreading the water pump assembly while also detaching the crankshaft position sensor through the removal of two bolts. The first No. 1 cylinder needs to be set at TDC/compression by aligning the crankshaft pulley groove with the timing mark "0" on the timing chain cover and verifying that camshaft timing gears remain aligned. The crankshaft pulley bolt removal requires Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) before detach the pulley. Remove chain tensioner assembly No. 1 while taking off the two nuts followed by avoiding crankshaft rotation without the chain tensioner present. Start by removing 10 bolts along with 2 nuts which secure the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly then disassemble the stud bolt by using torx wrench socket (E8) followed by carefully prying off the cover with your hands. The technician should remove the timing chain or belt cover oil seal together with crankshaft position sensor plate No. 1 and chain tensioner slipper. The chain sub-assembly removal requires a 2-screwdriver method with the crankshaft timing gear but users must protect their engine with a shop rag and turn the crankshaft 1/4 revolution to prevent valve contact with pistons. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression before installing the chain onto the crankshaft timing gear while aligning the yellow mark link. The installation of the crankshaft timing gear and chain onto the camshaft timing gears requires Special Service Tool: 09223-22010. The chain tensioner slipper needs a bolt installation followed by torque adjustment to 18.5 Nm (189 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). The crankshaft position sensor plate should be installed with the "F" mark oriented toward the front. Install the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly onto the water pump part (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) or other part (Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) by tapping in the new oil seal lip with Special Service Tool: 09223-22010. Ensure old packing and oil residue is eliminated from the connection surface. Fitting the cover requires installation of 10 bolts and 2 nuts and torque values according to specifications before placing the chain tensioner assembly No. 1 that should have its O-ring free from contamination and properly lubricated. Place the crankshaft pulley while aligning the set key then tighten the pulley bolt to 138 Nm (1,407 kgf-cm, 102 ft. lbs.). diginda the crankshaft position sensor with the water pump assembly, engine mounting bracket RH and V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly then the cylinder head cover sub-assembly by applying necessary seal packing. As the final steps, install the ignition coil assembly followed by the engine mounting insulator RH and generator assembly along with vane pump assembly and fan and generator V belt. Also add engine coolant and reconnect the battery negative terminal. Next check for any leaks before installing cylinder head cover No. 2 and the front wheel RH while torquing each component to specified values.
