2005 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2005 Toyota Matrix?
A: The replacement of the camshaft begins by disconnecting the battery negative terminal then removing engine under cover RH followed by cylinder head cover No.2 ignition coil assembly and cylinder head cover sub-assembly. Set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/Compression before disposing of the No.2 camshaft by marking the timing chain and camshaft timing gears for alignment then detaching the 2 nuts followed by removing the chain tensioner while avoiding cranking the crankshaft independently. Gently loosen the camshaft timing gear set bolt using a wrench because damage to the valve lifter can occur before you uniformly remove the specified 11 bolts along with the 5 bearing caps and the camshaft timing gear. Remove the camshaft by first loosening the 8 bolts according to their specified sequence then uninstalling the 4 bearing caps before retrieving the camshaft and camshaft timing gear as you keep and secure the timing chain with string in order to prevent anything from falling into the timing chain cover. To check the camshaft timing gear assembly inspect it by using a vise to secure the camshaft then check the timing gear lock while taping all 4 oil paths of the cam journal with vinyl tape and puncturing the tape to expose the advance and retard side paths before applying air pressure to verify revolution smoothness and the camshaft timing gear lock position. The installation of the camshaft timing gear assembly requires alignment with the camshaft while tightening the fringe bolt to 54 Nm using 551 kgf-cm torque specification. After installation, check for possible movement at the retard angle side. Insert the camshaft with timing chain alignment to the camshaft timing gear while bolting with 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) torque before installing the No.2 camshaft and securing the camshaft timing gear set bolt to the same torque value. Install bearing cap No. 1 using 23 Nm torque then tighten the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 54 Nm. Keep in mind to avoid damaging the valve lifter during installation and verify the timing mark position. After proper installation of the chain tensioner with lubricated and clean O-ring follow up with 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) torque value then rotate the crankshaft to unhook the plunger knock pin from the hook and verify the slipper extension length. Complete the procedure by conducting valve clearance adjustment then install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly along with the ignition coil assembly before reconnecting the battery negative terminal using 5.4 Nm torque (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Check for oil leakages after adding cylinder head cover No.2 and finally reattaching the engine under cover RH.
