2006 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2006 Toyota Matrix?
A: The replacement procedure starts by disconnecting battery negative and then following up with engine under cover RH removal and subsequent removal of cylinder head cover No.2 and ignition coil assembly and cylinder head cover sub-assembly. First step is to position the first cylinder at TDC/Compression and afterward remove the second camshaft through a process that includes adding matchmarks between the timing chain and camshaft timing gear and taking off the 2 nuts and chain tensioner from the camshaft while gradually loosening the camshaft timing gear set bolt with camshaft support and then uniformly removing all 11 bolts and 5 bearing caps to pull off the camshaft timing gear. Use a string to tie the timing chain before removing the camshaft through even bolt removal of the 8 bolts and 4 bearing caps. The camshaft and camshaft timing gear can then be extracted after holding the timing chain. You should inspect the camshaft timing gear assembly while clamping the camshaft in a vise to check for timing gear lock, then cover each of the 4 cam journal oil paths with vinyl tape, pierce the tape near the advance and retard side paths, supply air under pressure to both paths, and verify the timing gear movement in the advance direction. The camshaft timing gear should smoothly revolutionize by hand under inspection before being positioned in the most retarded state. The procedure for removing the camshaft timing gear assembly includes clamping the camshaft in a vise while covering the oil paths and puncturing the tape through which air pressure gets applied to verify the timing gear moves in an advance direction. After confirming these conditions the fringe bolt and camshaft timing gear assembly can be removed except for the remaining 4 bolts. To properly install the camshaft timing gear assembly, position the camshaft timing gear correctly on the camshaft while using a left-hand turn motion while pushing against the camshaft to confirm there is no spacing between the gear fringe and camshaft before screwing the fringe bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.). The installation of the camshaft requires the timing chain to be set on the camshaft timing gear with alignment to the paint mark followed by tightening bolts to 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) before installing No.2 camshaft with proper paint mark orientation along with temporary installation of the camshaft timing gear set bolt and completion with tightening bolts to 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) and finally bearing cap No. 1 to 23 Nm (235 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Tighten the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 54 Nm while holding the camshaft and maintaining the valve lifter safety during this procedure and also verifying the two-point marks alignment on the timing chain cover surface. Set the chain tensioner hook properly before applying engine oil to the O-ring and tightening the two nuts to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs) while avoiding any O-ring deformation during installation. Counterclockwise crankshaft rotation lets you remove the plunger knock pin before checking that the plunger pushes the slipper into the chain tensioner if required. The final procedures include checking and adjusting valve clearance followed by installing the cylinder head cover sub-assembly alongside the ignition coil assembly and reattaching the battery negative terminal with torque to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Next, check for any engine oil leakage then install cylinder head cover No.2 before reattaching the engine under cover RH.
