2007 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the camshaft on 2007 Toyota Matrix?
A: The first step of camshaft service begins with disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery followed by engine under cover RH removal and subsequent removal of cylinder head cover No. 2 along with the ignition coil assembly. The No. 1 cylinder should be set to TDC/compression after removing the cylinder head cover sub-assembly. The first step involves marking the timing chain and camshaft timing gears and proceeding to unscrew the 2 nuts and tensioner but avoid rotating the crankshaft without the tensioner in place. I will loosen the camshaft timing gear set bolt while maintaining grip on the camshaft with a wrench but I will avoid damaging the valve lifter. Apply the specified sequence to loosen and remove 11 bolts before you remove the 5 bearing caps and the camshaft timing gear. To remove the camshaft follow the sequence of evenly loosening all 8 bolts before taking out the four bearing caps and the camshaft along with the camshaft timing gear while holding the timing chain with your hand and securing it with a string to keep contents from falling into the timing chain cover. Use a vise to clamp the camshaft while inspecting the camshaft timing gear assembly by doing the following: ensure the gear stays locked, apply vinyl tape over all 4 oil paths of the cam journal, puncture the tape at the advance and retard side paths, and apply air pressure to check if the camshaft timing gear spins smoothly with the locking function active. Install the camshaft timing gear assembly by properly aligning it with the camshaft before torquing together the fringe bolt to 54 N m (551 kgf cm, 40 ft. lbf) after following the same setup rules which protect the camshaft from damage. Put together the camshaft timing gear with the timing chain accurately positioned before you tighten its bolts to 13 N m (133 kgf cm, 10 ft. lbf). Afterward, implement the No. 2 camshaft by securing the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 54 N m (551 kgf cm, 40 ft. lbf) while maintaining cautious movements to protect both the valve lifter and camshaft timing gear from harm. Set the timing marks correctly and install the chain tensioner with both its O-ring in proper position along with 9.0 N m (92 kgf cm, 80 in. lbf) torque before performing necessary valve clearance inspections. The repair process ends with cylinder head cover sub-assembly installation along with ignition coil assembly then reconnection of the battery negative terminal to 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf) before checking for oil leakage followed by No. 2 cylinder head cover and Engine under cover RH installation.
