2004 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2004 Toyota Matrix?
A: Start replacing the camshaft by taking away the engine under cover RH and then moving forward to remove the cylinder head cover No.2 via 2 screws and 3 clips and 1 engine under cover. Change the V-belt between the fan and generator by turning the tensioner right until the belt becomes loose then restore the proper tension to the belt. The engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH can be removed with both 4 bolts and 2 nuts by placing a wooden block between the jack and engine. To disconnect the engine wire start by removing 5 clamps which enables disconnecting the 4 ignition coil connectors and then removing the bolt and nut that secures the engine wire. Start the disassembly by removing the 4 bolts which hold the ignition coil assembly in place and 4 ignition coils and takze disconnect both ventilation hoses attached to the cylinder head cover. Uninstall the cylinder head cover sub-assembly by disassembling 9 bolts as well as 2 seal washers, 2 nuts, and 3 clamp brackets. To set the No.1 cylinder at TDC/compression you must align both the crankshaft pulley groove with timing mark "0" while both camshaft timing sprocket and VVT timing sprocket point marks properly align. First remove the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly components including bolt and tensioner and nut. Prior to camshaft removal never allow the crankshaft to rotate without the chain tensioner and maintain the No.1 cylinder at the TDC/compression position before marking the sprocket points and tensioner removal. Secure the camshaft with a wrench to relax the camshaft timing gear set bolt yet remove the camshaft bearing cap bolts alongside the camshaft by maintaining grip on the timing chain. The first step entails checking the camshaft timing gear assembly for proper locking mechanism followed by a smooth revolution check before removal. Avoid damaging the camshaft during this process. Install the camshaft timing gear assembly while aligning it to the camshaft and torque the fringe bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.) until it achieves the most retarded position on the retard angle side. The installation of the camshaft starts by positioning the timing chain correctly with the camshaft timing gear while tightening bolts to 13 Nm torque then securing bearing cap No. 1 with 23 Nm torque. After cleaning the O-ring and applying engine oil the chain tensioner must be installed with two nuts tightened at 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). The adjustment of valve clearance needs to be completed before you install the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly with its nut and bolt using specified torques to finalize the installation of the cylinder head cover sub-assembly by using seal packing (Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) at 2 locations and tightening bolts and nuts to specified torques. For the last step install the ignition coil assembly while also mounting engine wire and engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH and cylinder head cover No.2 then perform a check for engine oil leaks.
