2005 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Replace a Crankshaft Seal During Engine Rear Oil Seal Service on 2005 Toyota Matrix?
A: The replacement of engine rear oil seals begins with the manual transaxle assembly removal before proceeding to the automatic transaxle assembly removal across 2WD and 4WD drive systems. The process continues by using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to hold the crankshaft for removing the 8 bolts from the clutch cover assembly, clutch disc assembly, and flywheel sub-assembly. Use the same special service tool to support the crankshaft before removing the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly by unfastening the 8 retaining bolts. The oil seal installation calls for knife-cutting and prying the lip out with taped screwdriver while checking the crankshaft damage then sanding rough areas with 400-grit sandpaper. Install the new oil seal by first applying multi-purpose grease to its lip and conducting the installation with Special Service Tool: 09223-15020 combined with 09950-70010 or 09951-07100 while tapping with a hammer until the seal settles flush against the rear retainer edge while performing vertical strikes. During this process eliminate any excess grease. Reinstall the drive plate & ring gear sub-assembly after cleaning all 8 bolts and bolt holes while applying adhesive (Part No. 09330-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) to 2 or 3 threads of the bolts then torque all bolts uniformly to 88 Nm (897 kgf-cm, 65 ft. lbs.) in the specified sequence. The flywheel sub-assembly needs to be reinstalled through the same procedure while applying adhesive to bolts then torquing them to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) and finally painting bolts to follow with a 90 degrees re-torque in the original installation sequence to achieve bolt paint marks at a 90 degrees angle relative to their initial placement. Complete the installation process by using Special Service Tool: 09301-00210 for the clutch disc assembly and then add the clutch cover assembly before reinstallation of both manual and automatic transaxle assemblies across 2WD and 4WD drive configurations.
