2005 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Seal on 2005 Toyota Highlander?
A: The first step for engine rear oil seal replacement is to remove the automatic transaxle assembly together with the knowledge that it becomes simpler to install the transaxle following engine assembly removal. Use Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855) and 09330-00021 to fix the crankshaft before unfastening the 8 bolts which will enable you to take out the rear spacer, drive plate, and front spacer along with the ring gear sub-assembly. A knife should be used to cut into the oil seal lip before using a taped screwdriver to pry out the oil seal. Inspection of the crankshaft should be followed by sanding its surface with 400-grit paper when required. The new engine rear oil seal needs MP grease on its lip before using Special Service Tool: 09223-15030 and 09950-70010 (09951-07100) with a hammer to tap in the seal until its surface matches the rear oil seal retainer edge while wiping the crankshaft clean of any extra grease. Installation requires Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to secure the crankshaft along with cleaning both the bolt and bolt hole and applying adhesive (Part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) to the bolt end up to 2 or 3 threads. Position the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly by fixing the crankshaft with proper tools then bolt the front spacer and drive plate and rear spacer with the 8 bolts while torque to 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.) The automatic transaxle assembly should be reinstalled last.
