2004 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Seal on 2004 Toyota Highlander?
A: A proper engine rear oil seal replacement requires first clearing the automatic transaxle from its place after the removal of engine assembly and transaxle. You should first fix the crankshaft using Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 and remove the 8 bolts along with the rear spacer, drive plate, and front spacer. A combination of knife cutting through the oil seal lip enables the use of a taped screwdriver to pry out the oil seal. The crankshaft must receive a damage inspection followed by sanding rough areas with 400-grit sandpaper if any damage exists. The installation process requires users to apply MP grease to the oil seal lip while cleaning it from foreign particles before using Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09950-70010 (09951-07100) with a hammer to set the seal flush against the rear oil seal retainer edge followed by a crankshaft cleaning to remove excess grease. To reinstall the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly use the crankshaft Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021, first clean the bolt hole and bolt then put adhesive (Part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) on 2 or 3 threads of the bolt end before installing the front spacer, drive plate, and rear spacer with the 8 bolts tightened in sequence to a torque of 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). The final step of the procedure includes automatic transaxle assembly reinstallation.
