2005 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace a Crankshaft Seal on 2005 Toyota Camry?
A: The first step to replace engine rear oil seal with automatic transaxle (A/T) requires disassembling the A/T assembly following engine transaxle removal. A manual transaxle (M/T) must be removed next after performing the engine assembly procedure. Using Special Service Tool to secure the crankshaft allows removing the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly from A/T devices by removing 8 bolts and separating the rear spacer and drive plate and front spacer. During M/T replacement technicians should first fix the crankshaft with Special Service Tool before removing the 8 bolts, rear spacer, flywheel. The removal of an engine rear oil seal requires a knife to cut its lip followed by prying it out using a tipped screwdriver taped at the tip. Inspection of the crankshaft should occur following removal while sanding its surface with 400-grit sandpaper as needed. Apply MP grease to the new oil seal lip prior to installation while keeping it free from foreign substances and use Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09950-70010 (09951-07100) with a hammer to tap in the oil seal until it reaches the rear oil seal retainer edge before wiping off excess grease from the crankshaft. The installation process of A/T drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly requires fixing the crankshaft followed by cleaning bolts before applying adhesive (Part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) on 2 or 3 threads of the bolt end. Finishing the rebuild with 8 bolts securing the front spacer, drive plate, and rear spacer at 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). The flywheel sub-assembly needs a repeat of cleaning steps and adhesive application before installing with 8 bolts and achieving uniform torque of 130 Nm (1,330 kgf-cm, 96 ft. lbs.). Complete the repair with the installation of clutch disc assembly and clutch cover assembly for M/T and transaxle assemblies for both A/T and M/T.
