2005 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Clock Spring Sub-Assembly on 2005 Toyota Camry?
A: Service on Air Bag Systems demands observing warning precautions followed by disconnecting the battery negative terminal while waiting for a minimum period of 90 seconds prior to replacement work. The front wheel position should be straight ahead before using Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) to take out the Steering Wheel Cover Lower No.2 and No.3 and the Horn Button Assembly and Steering Wheel Assembly. The service begins by removing the Lower Steering Column Cover along with the Clock Spring Sub-Assembly through connector detachment from the upper steering column cover while being cautious of the Air Bag wire harness integrity. First detach the three claws from the Clock Spring Sub-Assembly followed by the Steering Sensor (W/ VSC) removal to examine the Clock Spring Sub-Assembly for all possible damages such as scratches, cracks, dents or chipping which would require immediate replacement if noticed. Fitting the Steering Sensor (W/ VSC) together with the new Clock Spring Sub-Assembly requires front wheel alignment and turn signal switch neutral placement to prevent clock spring pin snapping. Start the Clock Spring Sub-Assembly connector process while taking care with the Air Bag wire harness then place the Steering Column Cover (Lower) on before adjusting the Clock Spring Sub-Assembly while switching off the ignition and removing the negative terminal from the battery. The Clock Spring Sub-Assembly needs counterclockwise rotation until firm and clockwise rotation to 2.5 turns for marking alignment while staying away from the Air Bag wire harness. The last step includes installing the Steering Wheel Assembly followed by a check of the Steering Wheel Center Point then the Horn Button Assembly installation and restoring the negative battery terminal before conducting visual checks of both components and the SRS warning light.
