2004 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2004 Toyota Camry?
A: The first step to install a new Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring requires disconnecting the negative battery terminal. First point the front wheels straight forward before taking off the steering wheel cover lower No.2 and then the steering wheel cover lower No.2 (without steering pad switch for 4 spoke steering wheel) followed by the steering wheel cover lower No.3 (for 3 spoke steering wheel assembly). To replace the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly on a 4-spoke steering wheel use Special Service Tools 09950-50013, 09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020 and 09954-05021 for removal steps. Begin by disconnecting the device cover from the steering pad switch on the 4-spoke steering wheel followed by removing the horn button assembly before taking out the entire steering assembly. Start the disassembly by unwiring the Air Bag connector before disconnecting the clock spring sub-assembly connector and then unfastening its 3 claws. The clock spring sub-assembly must be inspected for connector scratches or connector cracks as well as cracks, dents or chipping defects; if these defects are observed, the cable assembly should be replaced with a new one. Set both wheels to keep facing forward while placing the new clock spring sub-assembly with its three fasteners to link the Air Bag connector and connector. Use 2 screws to install the steering column cover before checking that both the ignition switch is in the off position and the negative battery terminal is disconnected for 90 seconds. After that turn the cable counterclockwise until resistance stops, then turn it clockwise gradually to align the marks. After finishing installation of the steering wheel assembly use 50 Nm (510 kgf.cm, 37 ft.lbf) torque and then apply 8.8 Nm (90 kgf.cm, 78 in.lbf) torque when adding the horn button assembly. Check both components including the horn button assembly and SRS warning light.
