2005 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on 2005 Scion xB?
A: The first step to replace the vacuum brake booster requires cleaning any remaining brake fluid from painted parts. Drain the brake fluid while you start your work before removing the air cleaner cap sub-assembly. To disconnect the clutch reservoir tube slide its attached clip apart. Install Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to take out the brake master cylinder followed by the battery removal after which you must extract the brake actuator with bracket before disconnecting the brake booster assembly. Separate the brake booster vacuum hose through a clip operation and after that remove the clevis pin and brake pedal return spring along with their respective clips. The service process starts with unlocking the push rod clevis lock nut before removing four nuts and the push rod clevis to extract the brake booster assembly with its gasket. Install the new brake booster assembly by applying new gasket and fastening it with four nuts and push rod clevis while tightening to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Lithium soap base glycol grease should be applied to the clevis pin before installing both clevis pin and clip assembly. Then fit the brake pedal return spring followed by vacuum hose installation on the brake booster assembly. Adjustment of the brake booster push rod takes place with disconnected vacuum using repeated pressure from depressing the brake pedal when the engine is off. Pay attention to the tip of an accessory tool using chalk then insert this device into the brake booster assembly to measure the push rod's clearance from the tool which needs to be precisely 0 mm (0 inch). Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 can be used to fix the push rod together with the adjustment of the protruding adjusting bolt's length when properly depressing the brake pedal. The brake actuator with bracket and the brake master cylinder installation process begins using Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 before installing the clutch reservoir tube through clip advancement. After installing the air cleaner cap sub-assembly and battery users must fill the reservoir with brake fluid. The following service includes master cylinder bleeding in combination with brake line and clutch line (M/T transaxle) bleeding followed by brake pedal height adjustment and measurement of reserve distance along with free play check and brake fluid level inspection for leakage. A hand-held tester must be used to check the brake actuator as the final step.
