2004 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on 2004 Scion xB?
A: Before you install the new vacuum brake booster always remove painted surface residue from brake fluid contamination. Start the replacement by emptying brake fluid before taking out the air cleaner cap sub-assembly and removing the clutch reservoir tube by sliding its clip. The brake master cylinder extraction process requires Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 along with the removal of battery components followed by brake actuator with bracket and brake booster assembly. The brake booster assembly evacuation can start by moving the vacuum hose clip. Then follow with brake pedal return spring removal and the clevis pin together with its clip. After that loosen the push rod clevis lock nut and unscrew four nuts and push rod clevis to extract the brake booster assembly along with its gasket. Install the new brake booster assembly with fresh gasket while applying the four nuts to secure the push rod clevis which needs 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque measurements. Then apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the clevis pin before you fix the clip and pin in place. Hook the brake pedal return spring to its position while you attach the vacuum hose to the brake booster assembly by sliding the clip onto its termination point. The technician should inspect and adjust the brake booster push rod when there is no vacuum by manually depressing the brake pedal several times before engine start. A new brake master cylinder sub-assembly accessory tool equipped with a tip for chalk allows users to check if its push rod and the accessory tool joint has zero clearance (0 mm). Use Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 to fix the push rod because a brake pedal should be depressed sufficiently and adjust the length of the protruding adjusting bolt. The brake master cylinder assembly goes next by using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 followed by inserting the clutch reservoir tube through its clip. The repair sequence ends with installing the air cleaner cap sub-assembly followed by the battery then filling the reservoir with brake fluid before completing brake cylinder and brake and clutch line (M/T transaxle) bleeding. Assess the brake pedal height together with free play and reserve distance while checking the reservoir fluid level and searching for brake fluid leaks followed by brake actuator testing with a hand-held device.
