2004 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake master cylinder on 2004 Scion xB?
A: Draining the brake fluid should be the starting point for brake master cylinder replacement followed by washing off all fluid that touches painted surfaces. The first step requires the removal of the air cleaner cap sub-assembly while you detach the clutch reservoir tube through clip removal. Proceed by disconnecting the level warning light switch connector followed by manual disconnection of the two brake lines from the brake master cylinder with Special Service Tool: 09023-00100. Detach the two nuts and extract the brake master cylinder from its position. The mechanic should begin brake master less reservoir tank cylinder sub-assembly work by pulling out the reservoir tank stopper followed by reservoir and two grommet removal and cap and strainer detachment. The installation process for the brake master less reservoir tank cylinder sub-assembly requires application of lithium soap base glycol grease to two grommets before installing them while also installing the cap and strainer. Install the reservoir assembly while inserting the stopper properly and check that it is well attached. When the brake booster has no vacuum apply chalk to the accessory tool tip then place it into the assembly to measure the clearance which should be 0 mm (0 inch). Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 should be used for fixing the push rod by adjusting the protruding adjusting bolt length so the brake pedal stays sufficiently depressed when measuring the clearance. First attach the brake master cylinder to the booster by using two nuts which must be torqued to 13 Nm (127 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) and then restore the two brake lines through Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 with 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) torque before connecting the level warning light switch. You should reconnect the clutch reservoir tube by sliding its clip followed by putting on the air cleaner cap sub-assembly then adding brake fluid to the reservoir followed by bleeding the master cylinder and the clutch line. Finally, check the fluid level and inspect for any brake fluid leakage.
